Ermmm no its much more than just an email phone actually...it has fantastic multimedia capabilities but its bread and butter is communication though. I will say that the screen size on the 8900 is a drawback especially when browsing the internet and also it lacks 3G...if you want 3G capability then your looking at the 9000 Bold or the new 9700 Bold2 which is smaller than the 9000 Bold...similar to the 8900 curve but with 3G and a trackpad instead of a trackball for navigation purposes.
8900 curve is a fantastic little phone...id recommend one over any of the Nokia phones especially the n97...full of bugs and other issues.
The only Nokia that id be looking at is the new N900 which looks like a fantastic phone with a pretty good OS..something to keep your eye on if you can stretch to it.
I completely agree that it's a good phone and more stable than the N97, but purely considering multimedia applications between the two:
N97 has a larger, better, widescreen screen.
N97 has 3G (for streaming video/downloading music/uploading photos)
N97 has a better camera
N97 has a longer battery life
N97 has excellent audio-out, although the 8900 isn't bad.
Neither has a particularly amazing media player, but they both do the job
Curve 8900 does, however, support XviD/DivX out-of-the box.
