Hi, im thinking of buying (if its cheaper) or building a system using 2x Xeon X5550 processors. It will not be for graphical usage, more multithreaded programming usage.

Im thinking supermicro mobo and 6GB of RAM

Where is the best place to get this? Either as separate components or as a system (although most systems i looked at had expensive graphics cards which i dont need). Ive also already got a 24 inch dell monitor

It looks like custom-building, but living in the UK im trying to find a way to get components from the US where they're cheaper and handle import tax *somehow*.

Avoiding import tax is illegal, as such it is not a suitable topic for these forums.
We cannot recommend a competitor, as this forum is directly tied to the shop.

Regarding price, I think support is more important than the initial cost. It's too easy to save £20 on a motherboard which is dead on arrival and takes months to get replaced. Overclockers do not cater to the server/workstation market so don't sell dual socket boards.

The recommendation here is likely to be a 4ghz i7 processor at well under the cost of a dual socket board with two 2.66ghz processors, and faster at anything that isn't perfectly multi threaded than the dual socket system.

I agree, I could be getting myself a Xeon base with a:

Intel Skulltrail DS5400XS
2x Xeon E5430

But if not, it's an i5 or i7 build :(
