As thread title goes really,

I'm wondering how do I instal Vista on a different PC from the one it was originally installed on in the first place.

Won't the Serial key be rejected and tell me that it is installed on another machine already?

Any help appreciated,
Thanks.

Remove Win 7 from the original PC it was installed on.
Insert Win 7 disk into DVD of new PC and install as normal.
Active either over the net or via phone.
You are entitled to install Win 7 Retail on a new PC as long as it is removed from the original PC it was installed on.

errr, he said Vista :) (though i guess both Vista and Win7 will be the same)

If you got a windows disk with the PC then you just need to remove it off the original PC, then drop the disk in the new PC and install as normal. Activating should be fine if its full retail

OK so.....

If I had Windows Vista on 1st PC and I format it and instal Windows 7 with the 90 day trial..... (or would I need to instal Windows 7 retail - which I have got but haven't installed yet).

Then I put Windows Vista into a new PC and that will instal itself without any problems?

Just trying to clear this up,
Thanks

Install Vista on the other PC as you would do normally. If it doesn't activate automatically then go through the automated telephone service.

Obviously you're only permitted to use that license on one machine, so just format the original PC and install whatever OS you want on it.

Yeah this is what happend before with me having to ring Microsoft.

The problem I want to prevent is that I have sold Vista on the bay and I don't want them getting in touch saying this license key is invalid and they refuse to ring MS only to proceed with a paypal dispute.

I will instal the new Windows 7 retail I bought and hope that will stop any problems from arising later.

I'm just trying to stop any possible issues later really.

Sorry about the OS mix up :o

Do you plan to keep the new PC you have installed Vista on and then sell that copy of Vista on the bay? If so that is so naughty as the buyer would not be license legal

Oh man that is so off the mark now!

OK I have a PC with Windows 7 on.

I use to have my copy of Vista on it

I now use Windows 7

Thats why I sold Vista on the bay, I no longer use it!

Hope this clears up that little confusion ;)

lol much clearer

Was the copy of vista a full retail one? If it wasn't and it was just an OEM copy then legally it's tied to the PC it came with, though the person that bought it could theoretically phone up MS to activate and pretend it's still being used on that PC and that he's had to replace his motherboard etc

If it's the full retail copy then he shouldnt have any issue activating it, though it may require him to phone MS and just run through the automated service

Its the retail copy, I should have pointed this out in my OP.

There isn't anything illegal or funny going on here, just trying to prevent any problems that MAY happen later on :p

I know phoning MS is simple, so do you. But joe average is another thing!

He/she may not even have access to a phone! :p Probably best off mentioning it in the e-bay ad to be sure the buyer knows this...
