Champions Online: free play weekend Fri 30th Oct -> Mon 2nd Nov

nice, been checking the website now and then looking for a trial to give it a go.

If i'd never played it before I'd be fine just buying the game and giving it a try for a month, but after being in the beta, meh :p really needed a trial after it had been out a while to convince me one way or the other.

Not a great game tbh.

Suffers from the same total lack of content or end game that City of Heroes had. That coupled with the meganerf to everything just before launch ruined it.

I think it says a lot that it has been out less than 2 months and they're having free weekends already.

i think it's actually too easy, there's no real challenge to it. i do like the way it's very quick to level and quick to get about, no trudging across a map for half an hour and back to hand in or collect quests. i've just cancelled my sub and gone back to LOTRO, it might be worth another look next year but at the moment it's nothing more than an amusing diversion.

There is a lot of content on the way. It is still a very fun game. The launch day "nerf" was needed. The game was (and still is) far too easy. People were easily going through 5 man lairs by themselves (me included).

Anyway, I suggest people give it a try. I personally enjoyed CO way more than Aion.

Well that would explain why my open beta char got owned by mobs half my lvl. There was too many options with to little info on how it would play out. Not being able to fully respec wasn't good.

I'm sure with enough research you could build a totally OP char.

Half your level? Sorry, but you really must have had a rubbish character. My second level 40 character is a pure ice build (one of the sets nerfed hardest)...and I can easily take on anything levels above me. What level were you and what were you fighting? I find that very hard to believe.

I agree, it is confusing in the begining. But even my first character ever was pretty good and I knew nothing about the game back then. Anyway, we got a load of free respecs after that, and if you really need you can pay for them now. They are also a lot more affordable in-game too.

At the end of the beta I did the instant lvl 40 thing and went and spec. The char description said I had powerful pets but they were completely useless and bugged. The healing powers didn’t seem much use too.

Hmm Champions cost as much as other mmos (eg WoW, EQ2) which lets me respec for free, why on earth should I pay real money to do it? What my monthly sub for?!

That is because you fast tracked didnt have the level 40 equipment. If you level up properly you will not have a problem. But at least now I can understand what the problem was!

Well you can respec here for free to (although you are unlikely to afford a FULL respec, but then why SHOULD you be able to change your build whenever you want). At least now we have the option to pay for it though (not that there is any need if you use the free respec wisely). Also, you can test out all of your powers in the powerhouse (in which they have now added real world enemies to test them on). So there really shouldnt be a problem with choosing powers anymore.

Everything I've read seems to suggest the reason you should be able to do a full free respec, is powers at level 5 or 15, become completely useless at 40, or you take some that simply do not work at all, bugged to hell or their scaling for damage is ridiculous, meaning you can have a high level character with powers that make him useless and be unable to afford to take out the bugged powers.

But the biggest problem I've seen reported, which is what I felt in the beta, which is that combat is horrible, an auto attack that does decent damage and isn't like one attack every few seconds like in other mmo's, and city of heroes, but is constant and high damage(relatively). I've never played a mmo with more dull combat(up to around level 6-7 or something, maybe a tad higher), there was zero point doing anything other than auto attack on various characters I tried, the delay and animation of a higher damage but slower attack didn't speed up killing at all. That is game breakingly stupid in my humble opinion.

Oh well, i'll give it a bash but, frankly, even now years on I find City of Heroes to be a far more fun game to play, obviously more polished but just better, powers with a simple, effective description, ability to see how damage scales just makes it clearer what you might want to skip for later on, or even the full respecs from the ground up. The world while looking older and less shiny, is a style I far prefer also.

I guess this game will never live up to what I hoped even if it does get better, a prettier up to date with more classes and powers City of Heroes. :(

2 applications from a level 10 with STC will kill a level 40 player. Don't fool yourself into thinking this game is balanced, and more so do not try to fool others.

On one of my level 40's i can hit players for 15k, that's 5k more than the max possible life.

It's fun for casual MMO gaming, but as above, most new MMO's (including champions) should have been longer in development beta to iron out major balancing issues & End game content.

I remember getting to the end of a dungeon twice and the final boss being bugged so we couldn't complete it. was really fun before hand.

And dont try to fool people that it isn't. I am not saying the game is perfect, but it isn't as "unbalanced" as some people make out. The great thing about a free weekend, you can try it for yourself!

The worst thing about the game though is the community. I have recently just stopped posting on the forums. There are so many trolls over there and players who clearly have no social skills in real life! The death of the game will not be due to the game itself imo, but due to the players that make up the community. I try and help new players where I can, but so many people will just ignore cries for help or will just make fun of the people for asking so called "noob" like questions.

Wish I had kept my lifetime sub purchase for STO. That game looks really good. But after CO I am very reluctant to commit to Cryptic again!

Then these people will most likely kill STO. (Just look at the STO and people moaning I paid for beta via CO I want in now.)

Shame, but how did you get rid of it. Fingers cross I get a beta key (but Im not a CO player).

I still have it...in the hope that year or so down the line CO will be a good game and the game we all originally expected. The potential is there, but who knows. The problem is, I feel STO is shaping up the same way with a distinct lack of content in the beginning. Cryptic have some bigs plans for STO, so I really can't wait. There hasn't been a good Star Trek game in too long. The Starfleet Command series was one of my favourites, so hopefully STO plays in a similar way :)

If any of you here are trying the free weekend and have any questions, feel free to post them here. I am sure I can answer most of them.
