*** The Official OcUK Windows 7 Opinions Thread ***

My opinion? Well cold boot to browsing on Google in under 19 minutes (thats with all drivers auto installed apart from my ASUS D2and formatting 3 HDDs). Everything just "works" the UI is mroe intuative with handier features (the shaking, Task bar features). Performance in the games I have tried is slightly better somehow and generall W7 Feels snappier to use.

So far £66 on retails W7 is one of the best buys I have made and will probably be for a long time. I fully expect W7 to have a good legacy like XP

(W7 HPx64)

I should hope it was under 19 minutes! Could have restored the image, booted up to Windows and been half way through a CoD 4 map in that time!

I don't see how people can still be using XP in this day and age, everything about it feels prehistoric!

Whats wrong with XP like?
Its a OS just like Win7 and as an OS it works perfectly. Just because its old does not mean its rubbish or outdated.

People dont automatically trade in they old model car when a new one is released, right?

For the majority of the population XP does what they need. Its simple and easy to use. Its only the minority that have jumped on the Win7 bandwagon and because its new and cool. Its just MS propaganda at work.

Im sitting tight with XP SP3.

This. Also I doubt many businesses will be using Vista/Windows 7 yet. Hell the place i worked before where i do now were still using Win 2000 (2 years ago)

I hope you were kidding when you said from boot Windows 7 takes 19 minutes. From me pressing my power button on my machine at home (939 system, 2gg, x2 3800+ & XP SP3) it takes 30 seconds to get to the login screen and another 10 seconds from login to firing up google in firefox.
This could be reduced to maybe 20 or 25 seconds on a fresh install. (I havent formatted my OS drive in over 5 years!)

Been using it since April so I'm a bit bored of it now. Bring on Windows 8!
:p

I was wondering how people are liking the new taskbar, ive also been using Win7 since April (or whenever the beta was released), and i forced myself to use the taskbar and i like it ..... but today im considering bringing back quicklaunch as my taskbar is now becoming rather muddled :(

I'm sure when i used my mates mac years and years ago it had scrolling shortcuts for programs near the bottom of the screen. I reckon Microsoft has just stolen the idea and called it their own

I was using XP until Windows 7 came out so don't think I jump on the next new thing, but sadly XP is outdated, it doesn't support the latest technology, it won't ever support more than Direct X 9, it's currently only supported by Microsoft for security updates and nothing else and sooner rather than later it's going to become less supported in terms of drivers and software updates.

Like it or not you're eventually going to have to upgrade to Windows 7 or the OS after that.

Bad

1) Bring back the Classic menu. I know there's at least one tool to recreate the appearance, but it doesn't work on any of my machines (GDI+ error as soon as you select anything).

2) Win7 seems far less stable with heavily overclocked machines than XP Pro: since installing it I've had to drop the speed of all my rigs to get them stable again.

3) It seems painfully slow accessing and starting any programs. And agonisingly slow to install games etc.

4) I understand the need for UAC, but there ought to be some way to permanently exempt selected programs. I hate having to give CoreTemp permission to run every time I boot. If there is, I've not found it.

5) I want my own start up jingle thanks.

6) Bring back Outlook Express, even as a download - at least it can handle my aliases properly, unlike Live mail or even Thunderbird.

Good

1) It's pretty.

2) It's better than Vista. But so is smallpox.

3) Really - everything I like about it is in contrast to Vista; I'm struggling to think of anything that it does better than XP. Apart from, maybe, security.

4) OK, installing is easy.

Agree on the classic start menu!

You can have your own start up jingle. Right click desktop, select personalize (damn Americanism!) then click on Sounds.

Choose what you want to change and job done you can browse for MP3's, Wav's, etc. it should be noted though if you use one of the schemes it will probably change it (not tried but assuming).

Im liking it I think. The UI tweaks over vista are generally nice. Its taking me a while to get used to the task bar though. I had to switch off the thing that auto pins used programs to the task bar. If I want something down there, Ill put it there thank you very much!!!

Finally got round to installing it this evening. Really like it so far. Been on xp for over 5 years now (skipped vista on main rig altogether), very fast to install. Only niggle i had was with my netgear wireless usb adapter, finally got it sorted by running it in vista compatibility.

These are the things that demonstrate when people talk about how WinXp is so outdated. Win XP is simple light and even considering the fact that it is slightly outdated does exactly what I want it to do. Whereas vista and windows 7 seem to focus more on quite a few unneccessaries.

Its still confusing to those contemplating buying windows 7 though because there are tonnes of mixed reviews coming out from different users ranging from brilliant to poor.

I've not yet tried windows 7, my main reason being that i use some programs from 1999 and XP has been stable and secure for many years. I will stop using XP when microsoft stop updating it and when new programs and games are no longer developed for it.

Sorry I don't have time to read through all of this thread but just wanted to ask if Windows 7 Home Premium retail which is currently on OcUK for around £72 is expected to increase in price?

I'm trying to decide whether to buy it now or wait.

Its nice enough, I dont find it easy to navigate but thats just because it's change. All the little things I don't like are just cosmetics that I'm sure I can change with a play about.

Like I prefer the Quick launch buttons on the XP taskbar and opened windows to the right of that. With Win 7 it looks a mess when I have a few pages open.

I need to configure the drop down adress bar in IE to get rid of the favs and history as well.

Loads of minor stuff like that then I will be happy enough.

Well happy when I can actually get it to connect to the net every reboot because of network card driver issue. I'm just going to carry on with xp and wait for that to get fixed then try it again.
