Welding Glass filters

I'm not convinced my camera will be much cop with one of these, but for a couple of quid it's worth a bash! Ordered a 10 to see how it goes!

The thing is, the welding filters have a strong colour cast, much stronger than th weak colour cast of cheap ND filters. Welding glass is not optimised to transmit light with minimal distortions and aberrations. Even a cheap ND filter is at least designed with some notion of optics.

Anyway, why put a £3 bit of glass in front of 1-2ks worht of imaging technology?

Can't speak for the others, but personally...

At £3, it's worth a try for a few shots; it's not the type of photography I usually do, so I see no point in paying a fair bit more for a filter that might get used once or twice and consigned thereafter to the bottom of my kit bag.

And at the end of the day, if I really don't think I'll ever use the welding glass again, I'll (finally) replace the cracked glass in my old welding mask.

However, if it was to become something that I started using more seriously, then I would have to consider if putting a cheap bit of glass in front of my camera kit is the way forward.

A lot of people use Duct tape, licra (scuba gear or whatnot), to stop the leakage. Problem is, basically ruining your Cokin holder. If you flick through the TP thread, you'll see ways people have mounted it, from elastic bands etc :p
I found the cokin holder and ring for my lens was under £10, so I figured if I only use it for the welding glass then it's still cheap... I managed to wedge the glass in, it's a tight fit, and the I used Black Wrap in order to stop leakage:

Here's an idea of the tint, LED torch:

This torch is around 100 lumens, which is pretty bright (for a torch!)...

I have yet to try some long exposure shots, but I'm looking forward to trying some. :)

Another advantage of using a cokin filter is that if I ever get a lens which has a thread larger than 52mm, I can can just buy another ring instead of a whole new filter (or step up rings).
