UK government to get tough on file-sharers

Just think of a future where you could have the option to stream/download the latest blockbuster film in HD for say £5 straight to your home TV whilst it's still on at the Cinema, or purchase the film say two weeks after general/worldwide release to watch whenever you want, why would people want to bother with dodgy cam recordings with that available?

IMHO the music/film companies could do so much more to remove the problem, they are just too stubborn.

Netflix F T W ?, it is starting to happen already, it was inevitable really.

And tbh the music industry (although slow getting here) have came a long way, in fact I think DD in music sales is projected to take over retail sales of physical copies within the next 5 years

That's part of the fallacy that is perpetrated by the media companies. The quality of the releases on torrent is amazing now. Even cams are very, very watchable.

Oh come on they are not very very watchable at all, and I'm not basing this on what I have read in the media.

I think the only recent think that I would say otherwise about recently is Up.

I'm not going to argue with you. I have related my experiance to you and it's accurate. If you have poor quality cams then I suggest you get a better source.

as pointed out

if they made films and music available for a resonable price to be downloaed legally online, that would go along way to eliminating the piracy

In practical terms (forgetting legal terminology), it's stealing.

Not it isn't. Please go back and re-read the numerous posts that point this out. It's copyright infringement and that is a civil matter and not theft.

Get off your high horse!

It is no different to reading a copy of a magazine loaned from a friend rather than buying your own. People do that all the time without thinking about it.

Less melodrama TBH

Yes but if the industries get their way you won't be able to sell or buy second hand CDs, movies or books. Hell if they could find a way of making it illegal to lend people books, cds, movies or magazines (and ebook readers are going to help with books and magazines)

Leaving your paper on the train is theft. It denies the newspaper a sale! :D

Of course it's different to borrowing a friend's magazine. One is illegal, the other isn't . If you can't see how downloading a film or MP3 from a P2P network is different to borrowing a friend's magazine, then it's fruitless debating further with you. It's COPYright...borrowing a magazine has not reproduced the material.

BOTH RESULT IN A LOSS OF SALE! They are the same. How can you not see that?

I'm sorry but your talking crap, even some HD encoded rips looked poor blown up on a large screen, let alone your so called 'high quality cam jobbies', yeah they 'maybe' passable on a small monitor veiwed from a far in your bedroom but noway are they good enough for the lounge on a average sized TV, and not to mention the poor audio quality.

They keep cracking down on this, but does anyone know someone who has got in trouble for this?
It's not hard to set up encryption either, so good luck to them.

I took the decision years back not to use pirate software, music or movies and cancelled my Giganews account and have actually never tried P2P stuff. On occasion I have installed stuff that is an obvious pirate copy but if I like it I then go out and buy it and if not it comes off my machine, but I can't think of the last time I actually installed a pirate application. It is the same with stuff I download for trial if I like it I then buy it rather than trying to find a cracked version or password. Games are the same I have all originals and zero pirate software. Wasn't always the case of course and when I was younger I had more pirate home computer software than legit but for many years now I have chosen to buy what I need and not go near pirate stuff on my PC or on my Hi-Fi or DVD.

Each to their own of course and I perhaps have different circumstances that means I can indulge more than a 20 year old but fact remains sometimes you simply can't afford stuff but todays society seems to breed people who want without paying or earning. Sad but fact of life I guess and not much I can say or do will change that. Bar hum bug.

Which is what we are seeing the beginnings of in the gaming industry atm, publishers want to cut out the retailers that are making millions on second hand sales of their IP's, moving games over to a DD only model will allow them to stamp that out and keep control of pricing, plus cheaper distribution.

If only the government introduced a tough three strikes policy for real criminals who commit real crimes with real victims...

this
when my neighbours car was broken into and the police don't turn up (when you call them to let them know you can see the buggers doing it) does that mean he gets to commit a crime to even things out?
maybe if they spent less time doing paperwork/stupid stuff like anti P2P they would have time for real crimes.

I've received a letter from my ISP before, warning me to pack it in, yes. Using utorrent with encryption forced on.

I'm sorry, but you're talking crap.

When did I ever say they were of good enough quality to watch on a large screen? They are compressed so they would never look good on a large screen.

I watch my media on either my MBP, my other laptop or my PC. The quality is perfectly acceptable for that.

What did they say to you specifically please?

Can't remember as it was about three years ago :) But it had the filename of the software I was downloading so it wasn't just a bluff. I think it warned me to desist because it was against their (the ISP)'s rules, and I would be cut off if I continued. I have since changed ISP (but not because of that).

lowrider, it was Freedom 2 Surf.
