Having issue with vertical stripes on a 4850, seems to be only on compressed video, so that means dvd, divx, and watching my tuner card.....

Uncompressed video, bluray samples downloads, video from my chinese $20 spycam etc, are all stripe free.

Heres a grab...

Look just under the word STRIPES and you will see some stripes on the apartment wall, approx 5-8mm wide, on the brown wall, which should be a simple painted brown wall of the set, the wall should not have stripoes!

VVV STRIPES VVV

Here is an exaggerated, exaggerated in that on the top half of the grab I have used a gfx program to enhance the gamma and contrast ratio, this really brings out the fault....

Another... look at the stripes in the sky...

Anyone got a clue, its not the hdmi cable....

in what way?

Video which is compressed with divx/xvid/mp4/h264 or whatever, plays back ***p, video which has none of that compression, plays back fine...

As the desktop does not show the stripes, its in the overlay, as its not in 3d games etc, its in the decoding of the video compression, as the video de-compression is afaik handled by the card, the cards at fault...

I know some cant see it in video playback, son is one, had to show him it about 4 times before he could see what i was complaining at, but in a still capture its really obvious.

Just about to add another picture to the album, to exagerate what i mean as some cant see the subtle banding i'm complaning about.

uploaded another pic to the album linked in first post

Yup, my laptop, nothing, i also got a friend to download the same video and try it on his, then i emailed him my grabs, and he compared them to his grabs, he has no banding.

at first i thought it was because i had fitted a more power hungry card and i needed to uprate my psu, but then i remembered i had upgraded that to a 850w earlier in the year

Like I say its only on the video overlay part of the screen, and only when displaying a compressed avi, not an uncompressed avi.

ok an update....

I have borrowed an nvidia card, pulled the MSI, poped in the NVIDIA, booted up, catalyst had a whine about no card and win7 went off by itself and installed the nvidia drivers, i love win 7.....

Anyhow, played movie, no lines, paused movie, no lines... not a thing wrong with the nvidia cards output.

I hate to say this, but I think the output of the nvidia is crisper than the ATI on a full hd destop....

So, popped ati back in, stripes, its the damn card.

The nvidia is on the same MB, same PSU, same CPU, same, RAM, same movie,.....

I can put these stripes down to one thing and one thing only, the hardware decompression in the ATI is either broken in my card, or flawed in them all.......

Its only on compressed video sources, mpg, h264, mp4, xvid/divx etrc.

Uncompressed video, plays fine. (I'm getting my uncompressed video from a $20 spy keyring camera at 640*480 15fps)

So, I hate to say this but I now need another ATI card to test with.....

But then again do I, I know the faults with the card, cant surely be a compatability thing.(?)

Here is a capture form the ATI card, at first glance you wont see the stripes, but look closely on the grey paint of the cabin walls, and you can....

Look above, just under the wall light, alternating light/dark almost artifact like errors.

Here is a cap from the nvidia, no stripes..

well i have to kind of agree, better in rendition of sharpness/colours/contrast and other things that make a picture, but it should be stripe free.....

Try playing with the Avivo settings, under the 'All' section. Set it to use application settings on the first bit and then turn off any of the other enhancements further down. See if it makes any difference and then turn them back on one by one to see if one of them is doing it.

I can kind of see what you mean in those pics but they also look like really bad rips to start with. Maybe the ATi card is so good it is just showing them up more. :P

Can't say I've noticed the issue in any videos I've watched. Also in that instance, the Nvidia one looks really blurry. Look at the badge and the lights, lots of blur in the Nvidia shot. Maybe the Nvidia card is just blurring the stripes out of a bad rip? ;)

Oh yes the rips are compressed, but thats my point, its the decompression where the fault creeps in, if i had bluray playing I dont think you would see them at all, but we dont all have oodles of uncompressed video in our HTPC movie collections, especially when its old stuff that was only ever around in SD format anyhow..

And its not just the recorded stuff, but watching TV on freeview etc, has the same stripes, newsreaders etc are all sat in front of stripey walls..

Oh and this card, I bought it at a online store that sounds like ebayer, I went and tried to submit an RMA request, I got this...

The warranty for this item is covered by ******. Please continue with your RMA request for warranty repair/replacement.

Unfortunately the return period for this item has now expired. Please seek advice from the manufacturer of the product, in most cases they will deal with your warranty claims.

Bought in September just 7 weeks ago........

I could have paid more elsewhere but I thought I was saving money...(like when do gfx cards go wrong..)

media player doesnt use the gpu to decode anything as far as i know. It's a software issue more likely, between media player and the ati drivers. try a different player, vlc of media player classic.

Done all that before starting the thread so i didnt look a fool lol, the 4850 does its own decompression in HW, its all on the ATI site, I'd be happy to just turn it off and use software as a temp stopgap as in all other aspects I'm happy with it, and the cpu can handle the decoding being a q6600, as it did when i had a cheaper card before this one.

Sorry i missed your post, as i have just given up on the card and now watch with the stripes and try to ignore them and not wanting to through the beer throught the screen as i watch my friday night movie.

I do wish i could meet someone from ati in person...

I'd like to show them how i would like to install this gfx card.

Right first off lez i know what you mean as i had similar issues, the pics don't really tell the story.

I don't seem to have that problem now as i am using different codecs (either that or i haven't noticed lol). As people have previously mentioned it's likely to be a software issue as oppose to the card. If it was the card you'd get the stripes everywhere. Switch your codecs mate, i'm using the K-lite pack i believe. Hope this solves your issues.

Oh and stop getting stressed out and chill man! It's not like your card is dead or anything.
