Anti-war protesters hit a new low: defacing poppy posters

Disgraceful in that it attempts to politicise the Royal British Legion when they are anything but a political organisation.

They help and support veterans and widows and they do this without poltical leanings or the rights and wrongs of conflict.

If they had defaced it by using language offensive to the forces then I would agree this was a new low, but I think the way they have done it is arguably justified. As one of the Mail reader comments says, this is the message the British Legion themselves should be putting out. Putting pressure on parliament to withdraw our troops would far better serve the troops, than getting people to wear poppies.

Yet they become a political organisation when it suits them, by criticising the BNP. They can't have it both ways.

Criticism of the BNP does not make the RBL a political organisation.

The police service have criticised the BNP as have other Crown agencies yet they are not politically affiliated.

The BNP and Nick Griffin have attempted to exploit the armed forces for political point scoring. Considering that around a quarter of a million British troops were killed in World War 2 in the fight against facism then I can understand the view of the Legion and their associated criticisms of the BNP.

That's revolting, it is nearly as bad as Nick Griffin trying to use the poppy as a symbol to unite racist groups...

Why can't people just show some respect...

We can debate what WW2 was about, and we can debate what the BNP is. I doubt our opinions on either subject would agree.

Showing respect for our armed forces is exactly what Nick Griffin was doing by wearing the poppy.

Then the British Legion wades in - politically - and spouts anti-BNP propaganda.

Actually they didn't criticise the BNP, at least if I'm thinking of the episode you are referring to.

They specifically criticised Nick Griffin, not the BNP, for politicising the poppy

Defaced a Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal poster with a message to prosecute Tony Blair (pic in article). However much you might agree with that message (I for one sympathise with the sentiment), there's a time and a place for that sort of thing and this ain't it

That is pretty disgusting.

Didn't take long for someone to pop in this thread and start bringing in the BNP crap. Can't that stay in the other thread.

Showing respect for our armed forces is exactly what Nick Griffin was doing by wearing the poppy.

(a) What if they don't want his respect (respect is worthless if you don't respect the person giving it to you)
(b) Wearing a poppy all year around neutralises the effect and implies some form of approval, which Griffin didn't have.

Then the British Legion wades in - politically - and spouts anti-BNP propaganda.

I think you mean told the truth about the poppy... It's really said that you consider the truth to be anti-BNP propaganda

Notice none of the other parties abuse the Poppy in this way. I also think the Legion's obvious mistake when they contacted Griffin privately was appealing to his honour... because he clearly doesn't have any.
