A friend at work is after a little system, something nippy that will do video encoding.

He hasn't gave me a budget but something cheap with a quad and half decent on board GFX will do fine, no gaming will be done on it.

His requirements are.

Small case

1x 5.25
2 x 3.5 (1 internal, 1 ext or card reader)
esata (its ok if this is on the mobo)

Mobo needs

firewire
esata
Gigabit LAN
DVI out

Quad core, on board audio and video

Would AMD or Intel be his best bet?

Can anyone find a suitable case too, it needs to be small, a midi case it too big.

Thanks

This is what I came up with

ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO 785G Socket AM3
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 810
OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9
250Gb WD RE3 (I'm sorting him out with a used one)

PSU - 350w Antec or 400w Corsair
Case £30-50

Id look at the antec nsk 2480 case with PSU included, one left quick :D
With what you specced above, looks good

Don't think I would go for a desktop case for a compact system, a nice micro tower is less obtrusive in most situations, desktops are really only any good if in a rack or with a CRT monitor on top.

No offence to OCUK, but they don't keep the best range of Micro cases, especially not at the sort of budget you are looking at. I built a nice Micro system for a friend in a Coolermaster Elite 341 (about £40), then added my own choice of PSU (would recommend Corsair over Antec for that).

For video editing to my knowledge Intel is faster per Ghz. As such if budget will stretch to an Intel Quad then it would be preferable. Definitely better with a cheap Quad AMD than a similar priced Dual Intel though ;)
