Just had to vent a little bit here but phoned to see how much a new set of recovery discs for my Vaio would be and they wanted £38 for the set of 3 DVD Recovery Discs.

Bloody robbing gits is all I can say.

No, jst the usual I dont set the prices malarky. Total rip off. I said, how much does a DVD cost you guys, about a penny. He did say that it did include VAT and Delivery, I should bloody hope so.

Yeah but its just a copy of windows, an image, how does that cost anything as they've already paid for the license when they put the sticker on the machine.

Almost all manufacturers provide a recovery partition where you can create your own recovery cd's.

If you have a drive failure then they will almost always send these out FOC.

If you have reinstalled your own o/s and not created your own recovery cd's then you will be charged.

They are normally burnt on demand as o/s images change frequently so there is a cost involved in having staff, servers, multiple burners, packaging, printing, and courier. £38 seems perfectly acceptable.

I wouldn't call it extortion, but it's certainly pricey. Not much of a surprise really. Any reason why you need them? A clean install is usually a lot better.

I'm sure the image for a particular machine doesn't change, I bet they dont send it out with the latest updates and only include what was orginally installed.

But in actual answer to your comment and please dont take it the wrong way but your having a laugh. £38 is a rip off.

I do have the recovery discs I made when I first got the machine but I've installed Windows 7 from fresh and wanted some the programs that came preinstalled like the full versions of Adobe and Premier Elements but Windows 7 doesn't seem to like the recovery discs in the fact that it loads the 1st disc and asks for the 2nd, but wont let me proceed once I've put the 2nd disc in the tray. So I was gonna ask Sony for a set to just see it was my set that was at fault.

I work for a very large manufacturer of Laptop/Desktop and the operating system images do change 2/3 times during a products life. Windows updates are included, driver updates are included.

I dont actually understand this. What was the o/s originally installed on the machine? Vista Home Premium?

The recovery CD's contain the full o/s image and extras so that it will return the machine to the way it left the factory. What you seem to be trying to do (unless im mistaken) is install Adobe/Premier Elements onto Windows 7 using the recovery CD's you made from the original o/s (VHP?)

I stand corrected.

The Vaio recovery as an option to reinstall everything or reinstall programs and drivers on their own using the recovery discs.

What was your original o/s though, if it was VHP then its unlikely it will install on your Windows 7, as it will be looking for specific details of the build so that it cannot be used on any other computer...

It was Vista. My Vaio is only just about a year old.
Like I said when I insert the first disc and run it, it runs fine then asks for the second disc. When I insert the second disc and try and press OK it doesn't do anything, it just sits there waiting for me to press OK even though I have. I've tried running it in compatability mode and as an administrator but still the same. I even created ISO's from the discs and tried running it in a virtual drive but exactly the same.
I'm a bit gutted cos my Vaio came with a full version of Adobe Acrobat 8 and the Adobe Premier Photo and Video suites, though they weren't used often they were quite handy.

I remember back in the day a friend had a Tiny laptop, it had a recovery partition but the HD crashed- because the laptop came without any media he phoned Tiny up to ask for some recovery discs and they wanted £60 for them! You could probably have purchased another windows licence for that!

I don't think you'll be able to extract the individual programs from the images under a windows 7 environment, usually the programs are reinstalled using the Sony Recovery Centre from the first disc. There may be a long and complicated way but they are usually designed for one machine with the orginal OS in mind.

Those prices aren't actually that bad, give sonys usual extortionate prices.

What model sony is it I do have a couple of Sony images from previous laptops I've owned.

I'm not actually trying to extract the individual programs from the image. I'm using the Recovery Center option of just installing the programs that came installed instead of doing a complete reinstall of OS and programs.

I've got a FW11S.
