Upgrading to W7 Pro from Vista HP

Hello, am I correct in thinking that this upgrade will require me to format (i.e. do a clean intall) of W7 and therefore lose everything on my drive?

If so how can I save everything i want from my disk. I have no external drive big enough for such a task. Could i create a partition on my drive, copy everything i want across to it. Format and install the C drive, then move everything back?

Sorry if that doesnt make sense, advice appreciated.

You should be able to do an upgrade install and not lose anything

I hope so, i read elsewhere that it only allows upgrades from HP TO HP not HP to Pro :S.

Is Vista 64 bit?

Yes I'm going from 64bit to 64bit

I'm pretty sure it's not the case. As long as you are using 32bit > 32bit or 64bit > 64bit, you should be ok.

I did a Vista x64 HP upgrade to Win7 x64 Ultimate,kept all my files and games took a few hours but no issues

don't see any reason why this shouldn't work.

As was pointed out 32>64 bit is a no no.
