Hi guys - looking to spend no more than £60 on a set. I simply want the best for my money but am utterly bemused by the options available.

Currently i use onbaord Realtek sound which is fine and i wont be seeking to get a sound card any time soon.

Thanks in advance

currently running Logitech X530's (nice set of 6 speakers) which are 5.1 surround - they are great.

If i buy a simple stero set of headphones, im assuming they wont run in 5.1 mode and thus wont be as useful in terms of gaming?

Well, I would say a decent set of stereo phones would be a better choice than some 5.1 set. I think it's a gimmick tbh, and I think there are others on here that think that too.

Don't bother with any of the recommended headsets, for £30 you can't go far wrong with a pair of Goldring Headphones.

These will superior to any of the previously mentioned headsets.

Goldring DR50's are cheap but very good, I think you can get DR150's for around your budget so I would say go for those.
As for gaming, I had Medusa 5.1 headphones & they were pretty pap, with goldring DR50's (£10 RRP £30) I get better positioning & a surround effect that completely blows my 5.1 phones away.
Far better for music (even the mrs was wowed lol) films & gaming so all in all a very good buy.
Can't link to competitors on here so just google goldring & you will probably find a fair few links. Some others will say Sennheiser but I have no experience with them so no comment from me.

What he said. :)

Or there are the DR100's, which are priced between the two.

sorry whilst the Goldrings do look like a good alternative they have not got a built in microphone.

I should perhaps have mentioned that i use a mike in my original post. Sorry about that.

Any more thoughts on an alternative that has a built in mouth peice?

cheers

Buy a desktop mic or an elara clip on mic to have on your desk monitor. They will work well enough and you will then have a decent pair of headphones to enjoy music and films as well as gaming, rather than just a pretty shotty headset.

These Sennheiser PC151, might be ok. They would be good for skype etc, but it does say they are marketed at gamers. I get the feeling over ear phones would offer better positional audio in games.

Bigger over ear phones would be a better choice for gaming imo, but ones with a mic are normally the domain of Creative, Speedlink etc. Creative Fatal1ty Something like that would be good for gaming, but would lack sorely should you wish to use them for music too.

So I would say, it comes down to a choice between the Creative Fatal1ty type. Good for gaming, not so good for music. The smaller portable type like the Senn PC151, which again wouldn't be so great for music imo. Then there is a decent set of Stereo phones, that will do gaming, movies and music well, but you would need to get either a desk mic, or a clip on shirt/jacket type.

If you have no intention of using these for movies or music, then the Creative Fatal1ty would be a worth while choice.

I certainly wouldn't say the creatives are good for gaming in the slightest just because they are aimed at gamers. A good pair of headphones win in all areas.

;)

Recently purchased the logitech G35s, they're amazing for music as well as gaming. They have a little switch on the side of them that let you swap between the 7.1 surround and standard stereo.

A bit out of your price range though... i picked mine up for £74.99.

Well true, but the OP wants a headset with a mic attatched. If he does not want a mic separate, then you tell me how many good phones there with one attactched? Not that many I am guessing.

The Creative Fatal1ty is an option, should he wish to have an all in one, so to speak.

Admittedly, I was a bit hasty in saying the Creative Fatal1ty would be worth getting, if he did not intend to listen to movies and music. It's an option, should he wish to have phones and mic in one, at a lesser cost.

If the PC161's are good for gaming as Voxination says, then if the OP can stretch to that, might be the best option should he want and only want the mic attatched. If he can't, then the PC151 maybe.

The Sennheiser 555's are a good choice, but they are £70, cheapeast I have seen anyway, and then he has to buy the mic.
