£25 bank charge for 33p over limit

I guess if you live in your overdraft, so long as you dont use the buffer then it is potentially a good idea but Im sure some people will just use it as part of their normal overdraft. Personally I dont use the my overdraft facility at all but keep a cash buffer instead.

Thats what i was thinking, surely its just an extension to the overdraft, making it a little pointless as you could just extend anyway? If its interest free then you may as well drop the current level to virtually nothing and then use this free extension. :)

If it's not "yours", they shouldn't give it to you.

If you aren't capable of not going over your limit, get a cash card. Like the one from O2. They are free, and you can't go over your limit.

Do you realise that it is not possible for Visa, Mastercard or Maestro systems to perform balance checking on transactions, unless the terminal you are using happens to be supplied and administrated by the bank that supplied your card (and even then, it is not always the case)?

The only systems which support balance checking across all banks are systems like Visa Electron, (some) Solo, etc.

God FORBID PEOPLE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN SPENDING AND ACTIONS!

It really annoys me when people spend 50% of their time WHINING about "nannyism" and the "nanny state", but then spend the other 50% complaining how they are not protected from their own god damn stupidity.

Look, you've got me all worked up now.

Sadly I think those days are coming to an end, because of those same people complaining about it :(

See that does wind me up. People break the terms and conditions and then have the audacity to complain about it. There is becoming less and less reason to actually be sensible these days :(

I went over by £70 due to HSBC taking my full credit card payment, wanted to changed me £73 for 3 days over my overdraft. I complained and got all my money refunded :)

Moral of the story: if you dont ask, you dont get.

The problem is tho the banks make it WORSE for people.

Say i had £30 in the bank for my phone bill, but i didnt notice i sent a picture msg (50p) so my phone contract DD comes out my account..

OOOOPPPPSSS not anough money, so my phonebill is left UNPAID and ontop of that tha bank sends out a £25 letter to tell me this. I then get a letter from phone contract tell me i owe them £30.50.

Now this has not happend to me, but how tight my money is it could one day. So why dont the banks send you a warning so you can out the last 50p in and pay your bill? instead of putting you into £25.50 dept? Instead of the 50p you would have been?

This is why the banks are in court, and i hope it does come back that they have to pay the money back to people, and i don't mind paying the bank a monthly fee and to stop free banking all togeather, hell it might even improve then

I do think there are often inadequate consequences for failing to play by the rules. When you hear of people being convicted of benefit fraud to the tune of tens of thousands, not being jailed, and being allowed to repay it at 50p a week, there is something very wrong somewhere.

I digress... :(

So on one hand you're saying that 50p could send you over the edge in a month and on the other hand you're saying you'd gladly pay for your bank account? Why don't you save the £10 a month or whatever instead and then you wouldn't have to worry about the 50p?

Surely the genuinely poor will be worse off if banks start charging for accounts.

The banks are in court because people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own finances, instead expecting their bank to do it for them.
