With the approaching event of my clicking "CONFIRM ORDER"...
1 more question* :D

Will the thermal compound that comes (if any) with the i5 be good enough for overclocking? Or should I stick some Silver 5 (or equivalent?) in my basket and use that instead?

(I'll be using a Corsair H50 with the CPU)

Thanks, Rhys.
* - Not based on fact, there may be more questions.

I've always got best results with AS5 personally... (other than going for some liquid metal stuff but thats just nasty) mostly its in the application... most people put on far too much AS5 or apply it incorrectly.

im on the stock thermal paste that comes with the h50, it works well so far, but i did order some mx-3 as it out peforms silver 5 now, get your self some tim clean aswell if your buying paste

im possibly going to order the h50 and did buy Arctic Cooling MX-3 Thermal that i may use instead of the compound with it. still debating over it tho. A question also on themal compund when its opend as im applying it t another pc how long will it last once opened ?. is it a vcase it will be fine for ages aslong asits sealed ?.

Thanks for the replies guys.. i think I'll try some MX-3 based on what's been said. ;)

A small pea / grain of rice sized amount of compound. Let the heatsink spread the compound itself.
Would that be correct?

I personally wouldn't agree with that.

I love using the zalman zm-stg1 because of how easy it is to 'tipex' it on. just cover both the heatsink and the cpu with a thin layer and whack them together.

it's always better to spred the paste over the entire cpu instead of letting the compression of you fixing both together.

For AS5 I'm inclined to say no, the best method in my experience is to spread it out as thinly as possible with a credit card. They only changed it to the pea sized lumb because of the lack of flatness of the old Conroe processors. Using the credit card method meant that the cooler didn't actually make contact with the centre of the CPU (you could see this because the layer of AS5 in the middle was untouched). The lump method is effective for thin pastes that spread easily but I'm not convinced for AS5 that that's the way to go and will likely hamper performance if the CPU is flat.

It's something I entend to test out in the next month or two when I have some spare time.

RE: Tim Clean.

Will my bottle of nail polish remover not be sufficient? :D
