PowerDVD9 stopped playing Blu-ray

Wanted to play a Blu-ray film tonight but whenever I ran PowerDVD9 it got to about 76-84% of loading the disc when it just stopped loading the disc and disappeared. I restarted the PC to see if that helped. It seemed to get to 90% this time before crashing.

I'm on Windows 7 x64 and this WAS working earlier in the week as I watched the Bourne Supremacy with no problems and wanted to watch Bourne Ultimatum this evening. PowerDVD9 will play normal DVDs OK so how can it refuse Blu-ray discs? The disc for Bourne Supremacy was in the Blu-ray drive when I took it out to watch Bourne Ultimatum. Neither disc works.

Is there some service that Windows 7 runs that PowerDVD9 needs for Blu-ray playback?

During the writing of this post I tried two other Blu-ray films. They both worked. So why do they, Sin City and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, both work but NONE of the Bourne trilogy films work when the first two did work?! :confused:

I was thinking about reinstalling PowerDVD9 but if Sin City and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang both work then the Blu-ray part of PowerDVD9 is working.

Have you enabled DEP?

It was on for Windows/essential stuff only. Have switched it to all. See if that helps.

DEP changed to all and I restarted PC. No change.

What have I changed that could have resulted in this I wonder. :confused:

Sorry I didn't explain much in my post, was settling down for bed.

Last time i used PDVD9 and had DEP set to all, the DEP mechanism would kick in each time PDVD tried to set up a java VM to execute the BluRay code within, once I added PDVD to the exclusion list it all started working again.

Have to tried the trial of Slysoft AnyDVD HD?, that strips out all of the unneeded DRM and fluff that can cause issues.

A few things to try:

Firmware update your drive.
Do the disks actually get recognised by your drive?
Reinstall Power DVD

Edit: Bah - beaten by seconds - I'd still Firmware it though!

just out of interest is your version of powerdvd a legit copy ? i bought powerdvd 7.3 deluxe as a digital download just under 2 years ago from well known aution site . had no problems with it and was even able to do updates. had a problem playing t2 skynet edition so contacted cyberlink. i supplied them with my key number and they came back saying it was a pirated number.

fortunately i had powerdvd that came with my sony drive so installed that , with 0 problems now.

Checked the firmware for the drive and there's nothing new. How would I check what firmware I actually have on the drive? The firmware available online is from before I got the drive.

Disks are recognised yes. I've tried running PowerDVD and playing them that way AND right-clicking them in Explorer and running them with PowerDVD. Going to reinstall PowerDVD in a bit.

Yes. I bought mine at a reputable online shop.

It is now working again! I removed PowerDVD and reinstalled it. Applied the patch it prompted me to download and am now watching Bourne Ultimatum

Right had this problem again. The Italian Job and Yellowstone both wouldn't play. So I remembered this thread and tried the reinstall trick. Worked. :confused:

What is going on with PowerDVD9 that a reinstall fixed?!

Ive been having a bit of a problem as well with pdvd9 ultra, inserted the district 9 blu ray, got to 99% then hung there, closed pdvd and reopened it, pressed play and it loaded and played fine, also on dvd, incidentally the bourne identity and supremacy, the disk loads but all i get is a bright green picture with sound, menus are still visible though. Currently running the latest pdvd9 updates.

Both the Italian Job and Yellowstone got to 99% then froze. The Fugitive was also like that but the second time round it played OK. The Italian Job and Yellowstone didn't play second time round. Got the latest updates too. I think this is why I'm right to get a standalone TV and Bluray player. The system we've got in the living room is so much more usable than PowerDVD 9 Ultra.

Thats the way i went myself marc, sony player on a 32in 1080p sharp lcd. Whack in a disk and thats it. The pc is nice though if i want to watch a movie when im in bed, but it can be problematic. Just inserted district 9 in the drive tray and its loaded no probs this time. :confused:

Yeah. We've got a 32" LG TV with a Samsung Blu-ray player. I'll get the same TV but another Blu-ray player. Going to have it in my room so I should be able to watch films in bed. :cool:

Hopefully I can get the system in place for the first GP of F1 2010.

I had excatly the same problem. Found out it was the latest drivers for my ATI graphics card so I had to a reverted back to the old drivers (cats 9.9) and it works fine now.

Hadn't thought of that. But then it wasn't working last night, reinstall PowerDVD 9 and it did; no change to graphics drivers for my 4870.

yeah look out for the ati drivers, they have cause me problems after changing in the past,

I have had this issue with star trek but usually a reboot is enough to start it again, i suspect its something to do with my media center going to sleep then not waking up properly

For PowerDVD ALL BD & HD-DVD versions you need to constantly update your graphics card drivers as well as update to the latest PowerDVD build. This is because Cyberlink are required to use the latest HDCP encryption keys as part of their licence agreement.

Major PIA for us but 99.9% of the time it fixes this (Fox BD's are an exception as they also update/change their BD+ HDCP keys on almost every disc now to slow down piracy but all it does is slowdown the legal buyers like you & me :mad:

).

ATI/Nvidia also update the HDCP keys everytime they release a new driver set. ATI I found were much slower than Nvidia so sometimes I would be waiting longer until they updated the drivers. Nvidia seem to do it on every driver release however!

Also 1 other thing is download & install this free app from Cyberlink which tests for BD playback on your system.

I noticed a handshake bug with HDMI connection from PC to HDTV in that it usually does not connect first time so run their advisor twice and it should appear green against HDCP then run PowerDVD & its good to go (glad I never bought the $100 Ultra version and can use the copy bundled with my BD drive as Cyberlink support sucks but its still the best compared to others who have even worse support- if thats possible :eek:
