Reading text on the 2209WA

Alright, so I recently receieved my monitor - A dell 2209WA, and found that it is brilliant for many things, but one thing it seems to be failing in for me is reading text, when reading thin text, the text isn't the colour it's supposed to be, or rather when looking at it you can see that it's not white for instance, but instead it's got like a tinged glow to it. This doesn't seem to happen with all text, it depends what background it's on. I also found that if i was to open up notepad and write "m" it would be slightly blurred.

Did/does anyone else have this problem? And could it be a calibration issue? Those of you that have a 2209WA, what are your calibration specs? Thanks.

Hmm....This is awkward now, on some websites turning on cleartype fixes the issue (OcUK is one of them) and on some other websites turning off Cleartype (Including notepad) fixes the error. What do i do now?! :p

Cleartype is recommended, as a rule, when using LCDs.

I use:

Brightness 10
Contrast 70
Sharpness 40 or 50
Dynamic Contrast - off

Yes, I am mr X Plosion.

I find that overall, having Cleartype text off looks better, the text is less blurry, when Cleartype Text is on, all the text has a slight blur to it.

Were you already using similar settings to mine and still getting the problem?

When i'm next on my desktop i'll tryout your notepad test and post back.

If you're running Windows 7, then try using the cleartype tuning tool. It'll run you through various pieces of text, and you can choose the sample that appears best to you.

I tried you settings also, same result. I don't know whether my monitor is faulty or something, or whether I'm just being fussy. I maybe just had too high expectations for the Ultrasharp range :3

It could be a subjective problem - but the only way you can decide this is by comparing your screen to another monitor.

I loaded up notepad and typed in a few words which included the letter 'm'...

The letter 'm' is very cramped compared to other letters which seem to be given far more space for their form (i assume you'll know what i mean) in notepad. I'm guessing/hoping that this is what your referring to however i can't replicate or notice the 'tinged glow' that you refer to when reading other skinny text.

What colour settings are you using?

The glow you're describing is due to the sharpness being set to the wrong value so what you need to do is find the value that turns off sharpness altogether. Some lcd-TVs have this as well and it's sometimes not even possible to turn off.

Here's a guide on how to choose the optimal sharpness for your display(40 seems to be the optimal value for the 2209wa):

Turning the sharpness off altogether makes it super blurry.

Well, actually, I can't turn it off, only reduce it to 0, which probably is not the same :P
