Vista x64 to Win7 x64 - Should I or Shouldn't I?

OK, I'm going to ask a very basic question, I have Vista x64 HP and I want to know is it really worth upgrading to Win7? I downloaded the RC version and installed it on my old AMD 3200 with 1gb ram and it ran well where as no chance with Vista. But my current OPC spec is well above that and I run loads of latest games under Vista and they work fine, so why spend £70+ just to go to win7? Is it really going to benefit me or millions in my position?

There's a few other threads asking similiar questions.

But, it depends - are the new features worth it for you? For me, yes. The new stuff like the drag and snap, the way the task bar handles where programs can be pinned. The stability, speed and overall features of W7 made me purchase it. I'm still using the 7100 RC, but apparently the release versions are faster.

I'll know for myself I guess when I can be bothered to install it and replace the RC! :p

Since you didn't pre-order personally I'd say no. Wait until you upgrade your rig, I'm not saying it's slower just that you've got a perfectly working Vista rig just now. I really like Windows 7, but I jumped from XP to it so there was a fair bit of improvement.

Save the cash imo!

Does Win 7 have all the driver compatibilty and range of drivers? I niticed when I used it that I attached USB flash drives and not all the drivers were available, where as Vista x64 just found and installed them whether they were specific or generic, it just seems so easy.

And another thing does Win 7 have the Aero feature which at times is really usefull rather than keep minimizing apps? And what about app compatibity, when I installled apps they saw Win 7 as Win ME.....or 98......Are the soft manu's onboards with Win 7?

ive jsut done this very upgrade via student offer. windows 7 pro for 30 squid. cant argue with that :P

imo its much slicker, love the taskbar icoons. wverything seems much simpler. only gripe right now is that ive done the usual windows updates where it picked up my network adapter so told it to install the new driver....then got the dreaded default gateway not accessible notification, therefore no internet!!! i googled and seemed like its a wide spread issue. anyhow i rolled back the driver and all is well. who wud have thought....

IMO, its not worth the cost in upgrading from Vista SP2 to Win7.

For me, there aren't any compelling features, no added security and in a recent anandtech review there aren't really any big speed differences between the two OS's on decent hardware.

I'd personally put the saved money towards something else.

I did the upgrade you are considering and to be honest I'm underwhelmed. The new taskbar is nice but apart from that I've not noticed any speed or stability improvements (Vista worked perfectly well for me) and in fact it seems slightly slower if anything in desktop usage and perhaps slightly quicker in gaming.

It also took ages to mirror my old vista drive, do a fresh install of Win7, realise the bootmgr was put on the wrong drive, do a further Win7 install then go about reinstalling everything.

I just did a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium Retail 64bit version to replace Vista Home Premium 64bit and have had no problems after fixing the above problem with Win 7 putting the boot manager on my other HD. Just disable the other drive in the bios before installing Win 7 and it should be ok. I had to disable my other HD in the bios and then run the Win 7 Dvd and choose the repair option and voila it did the repair and boot manager was on the same drive as the os. No problems so far, have only installed one game, Fallout 3 and my save games folder meant I just picked up from where I left off in Vista. I like Win 7, its snappy and responsive and so far problem free.

Is it worth upgrading from Vista 64bit? I think so but I pre- ordered for £49.99, would'nt want to pay full price though! For DX11 and if you intend or have a DX11 graphics card I would ask what are you waiting for!

I will get a DX11 card after Xmas and hopefully when the cards are cheaper.:D

I've stayed with Vista 64 HP, the only thing I can see that even approaches being worthy of a £70+ upgrade is DX11... how many games have that yet? How many grfx cards have it?

Vista works perfectly well for me so feel no need at all to hand any more money over to Mstr.Bates :)

Personally I think if you're happy with Vista, then stick with it. Although W7 does have improvements, it's not that big a leap over it. If you were still running XP, then I'd say go for it without question - far easier to justify in that situation.

Still, up to you... I went from Vista to 7, but only because it was cheap (£45).

DX11 is now available for Vista, so that nullifies that as a reason to upgrade.

Some great feedback all, thank you. After reading these I think I will stick with my stable, easy to use, feature rich, DX10 (DX11 soon), copy of Vista x64. From what I've seen of Win7 I think its got a purpose in todays market place where it will run at high performance on lower spec systems, but hey, I love my quad, my GTX280 and they were designed to be ridden hard by Vista and it does it wonderfully. So shall I upgrade, no I think not.

What I would like to now is are there any tuning tips for Vista that I can apply just to take out any specific processes that my be adding extra resource load on it that I don't really need?
