Yas Marina Circuit - Abu Dhabi Prix 2009 - Race 17/17

Kobayashi is awesome indeed :D

To early to say for sure but we may have a star here. Ignore GP2, it's what he does here and so far he has been rather good if a little FF1600 in his tactics, though kicking the old boys in the nuts or getting them riled is always what the stars do of course. The more they get under the skin the more we should watch them and he is going well as he was in Brazil.

I'm not sure why there is such a lack of overtaking now though. Long straights, low speed corners. Should mostly be about traction and power, rather than aero.
I think many cars are just struggling with a good setup here, the gaps between different cars in qually were huge compared to some of the other races.

Very dirty offline - problems with having a track thats only used once a year and it's in a desert!

Still far too much reliance on aero - can't get close enough to overtake down the long straights - we need less aero and more mechanical grip - even bring back ground effect!

Suppose the first issues can't really be helped too much.
As to the aero issue - agreed. I'd love to enforce monza levels of downforce all year round with bigger tyres!

Sounded like they have more races planned though in future if the CEO of the complex was to be believed. Or at least I took that to be what he meant when he said they had a busy programme coming up. That might help bed the track in a bit more I guess but yeah, less aero and more mechanical grip would be welcome.

Stop building tracks in the middle of the desert in countries with little history of motor racing?

Or as the OP said, ground effect. It's made a comeback in F2, so why not F1? It's a clever solution to the problem of aero.

It's quite simple to solve.

Don't build tracks in the middle of the damn desert!

lol indeed! :D

They're definitely planning on more races. The wouldn't bother with a track layout that supports 2 races running at the same time if they were only going to do the F1.

Not Tilke's fault it is in a desert though. lol. That was the subject I was commenting on!
Agreed on ground effect, I've been saying that for a while. Shallow monza like wings, with the main downforce from ground effect.

With all the money spent on this place they could have bulldozered some extreme elevation changes a la Spa.

They're not allowed extreme elevation changes and similar nowadays. The tracks being boring nowadays isn't Tilke's fault. It's the FIA's regulations.

But they are allowed elevation changes, look at Turkey - that's fairly undulating.

Hmmm...Jenson doing his usual trick of getting the tyres switched on when it's possibly too late to do anything.
