I read hilux wrong, my mind then ran back to my mates daihatsu hijet and I damn near ****ed myself lauging at the prospect of anyone spending money on one. :D

I'd go for the pioneer, always found them to do very good head units. Not really heard much about clarion.

Thanks for the Pioneer vote.

Are all Double DIN ICE, whether it is Pioneer or Clarion the same dimensions or will I need to do some research to make sure the Pioneer fits my vehicle?

You say any thoughts appreciated, mine is that given you are lucky enough to have a double din slot, i would get something with a decent screen and nav built in. There are some absolutely lovely fully featured double din units available.

It´s not that I am against getting a SatNav, it is just have not replaced an ICE for about 15 years, well before SatNav.
For example for the Pioneer I will need a PC2-17-4 Wiring Harness, but for a SatNav will I need a special Wiring Harness?

The headunit will come with standard ISO fitment, chances are you'll need a wiring adapter for your car.

DIN is a standard aperature size, and the clarion and pioner will both fit the same slot.

You won't need anything particularly complicated to fit either of them, the sat nav is built in. Unless you're completely incompitent, fitting should be relatively easy :)

Out of the two, go for the pioneer, sound quality will be superior. But as has been said, there's some AWESOME kit on the market, so stop being a wuss and get a sexy HU :p

Ant

Echoed.

My single-din Pioneer P7000UB has as many features and a better display than both of those double-din units. I'd definitely want one with a nice big touch screen so I can easily browse loads of music, have navigation etc, if I had a double-din slot :)

Never been a fan of these really cheap double din units, no point to them really, get a better quality single din unit or splash out on a double din nav setup.

I want a double din slot so I can put one of these http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/8416.html in.. Looks lovely :(

Thats the sort of thing i meant yeah, looks like a decent little unit and offers a decent featureset. You can also move it car to car when you change assuming you stick with double din cars.

Failing a full feature unit like that just get a normal single din along with a cubby hole blanker. More versatile and will be just as good as those basic double din units.

What's the nav on these kind of units like from both an ease of use point of view and in terms of being easy to keep up to date? Do they use bespoke systems or do they integrate stuff from the big names of satnav into their units? I'd be worried about being stuck with an indass system having too many annoying quirks or being expensive/impossible to update.

I'm currently using an old portable tomtom unit but the Galant has space for a double din unit and I'd prefer something in-dash. Until now I've been considering using a PicoITX board I've got and building my own double-din in car PC but if these are OK then I might be tempted at some point.

I dont know about the update routine (i assume they use a standard teleatlas style DVD ala every other satnav) but ease of use is absolutely fine. They are touch screen (as opposed to the wheel & click input of most nav systems) which is a nice.

Wouldn't bother with a PC. I don't care what any incar PC fanboy says, they are absolutely flawed. It will never work properly, it will have "features" which you cant be bothered to sort out, it will be a messy install, they are just pants.
