They have improved the problem with each revision of the console hardware to a point now where failures are far more rare. It's very difficult to change an inherent design fault with something like this as it would require a major redesign and retooling of the factories physically producing the machines.
I wouldn't be worried about buying a new machine today. Even if it does go wrong, you've got 3 years to get it repaired completely free.
