8800 ultra kaboom!

How about a 4870 or 4850? The P5K should do Crossfire (from memory) so you could always add another card in the future. If you get a 260 then you wouldn't have that option.

Dont buy a 275 at this time dude :/ Buy something like a 285 or a 5850, its more bang for buck, Yeh your spending like 50 quid or so more, but hey your getting a lot more dude.

If you're willing to spend around £150 for an old hat old tech nVidia card, then you may as well cough up the extra money and get a 5850, you could then pair it with another 5850 in the future.

Right guys i am off to buy something tomorrow because my laptop as nice as it is just doesn't cut it! Going to try and get to the ocuk store so what is my best bet for what is available at the moment? Will the guys there be able to give some good advice?

Really not a good time to be buying a GPU... :( 58x0 out of stock, 260GTX only card worth spending money on from the nVidia range and that doesn't really have that much future left in it once DX11 really kicks off.

But it's not the only card worth buying, you've got the 4870 and 4890. You can get a 48701GB for just over £100 now.

Yeah but the lack of DX11 is going to eat away at you... atleast with nvidia cards you can try to convince yourself "I did it for physx".

I think the 5770 is probably the better compromise (which strangely enough is actually in stock everywhere) if you can't get hold of a 5850. Really I'd suggest waiting it out if at all possible. Could be a while before the 5800 series really go down in price, though, AMD kind of has the market by the short and curlies at the moment.

5770 would be an ok upgrade from an 8800GTX... but I'm assuming his board either doesn't support crossfire or if it does have a 2nd PCI-e slot it only runs at 4x... so he couldn't cf a couple of 5770 :S

Problem with the 5770 performance is quite varied... at times its similiar to a 260GTX, in a very few cases it can beat it, but quite often it drags moderatly behind.

Agreed, but let's face it, none of the cards are a perfect buy at the moment - the 4870 1GB is cheaper, the GTX 260 has various misc. nvidia related bonuses, although neither support DX 11 and the 5770 has DirectX 11 and significantly lower power draw - but with the compromise of a slightly worse price/performance ratio.

Based on personal experience, the 260 has amazing OCing head room and bashes the 4870 good when utilised; even gives the 285 a run for its money.

If you like moving cloth and pieces of paper flying around the shot, then PhysX is also on your side.

+1 GTX 260
