Fair Droid review: http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/

So, is the DROID a good smartphone? Yes, the DROID is an excellent smartphone with many (if not all) of the features that a modern user would expect, and if you're a Verizon customer, there probably isn't a more action packed device on the network. That's not to say the device doesn't have its faults; the camera was unpleasant to use, the application selection feels thin in both quantity and quality (despite the claim of 10,000 options), and the phone has bits of basic, non-intuitive functionality that might chafe on some users after a while. But even still, it's hard not to recommend the DROID to potential buyers eager to do more with their devices. It's easily the best Android phone to date, and when you couple the revamped OS, Verizon's killer network, and an industrial design straight from a gadget enthusiast's fever-dream, it makes for a powerful concoction. Ultimately, the DROID won't usurp the iPhone from the public's collective mindshare or convince casual users that they must switch to Android, but it will make a lot of serious geeks seriously happy -- and that's good enough for us.

I wonder why they've gone with such a silly and (seemingly) arbitrary amount available for apps. It does seem more than a little odd given the easy and cheap availability of expandable storage not to make it an option at least to use it. However games aren't a major selling point of a phone for me, I'll usually install a few simple games and play them while waiting around but it's not a big issue for me.

//edit oh, you've removed your original comment. Nevermind, my point still stands. :)

Verizon is a network in the US, much like our O2/Orange/Vodaphone/T-mobile etc. Although as I understand it their network (and hence phones) is done differently to ours and therefore not compatible.

Yep they use CDMA technology which is the sim info is hard coded into the phone ie you cant use a sim card whereas we use GSM technology here with a sim card.

Saying that some of the Verizon phone are world capable so you can use GSM Sim cards in them..but very few are.

I dont know about this phone...ive seen a dummy in the Orange shop the other day and i have to say...its just not a very nice looking phone...i found the keyboard to be a bit awkward especially the top row keys...they sit too close to the slide mechanism...although maybe this was because it was a dummy unit rather than a real live one.

Personally i wouldnt touch another motorola phone with a bargepole...

nail on the head for me there.

The mere mention of the name brings me out in cold sweats as I remember my experiences with frankly abysmal t191 and the equally shambolic v500.

Sorry, but that motorola badge is one bridge too far for me.

Where out of interest?
I hadn't heard that this was even announced for a UK carrier as of yet let alone dummy units being out in the shops.
Are you sure it was the Droid and not the Dext (which is already out on Orange)?

After using the Nokia 5800's awful virtual keyboard and screen, which is near-unsusable at speed without a stylus, I feel a hardware keyboard is a must.

It's not if you have a decent virtual keyboard, e.g. iPhone. I'm frustrated that the Droid has a hardware keyboard... it adds unnecessary bulk to what is already a fairly heavy and ugly handset.

The spec is impressive, particularly the massive screen resolution, and Android seems to be improving in leaps and bounds. On the other hand, it's ugly and it's Motorola.

The decisive factor for me would be the fluidity of the interface. After having an iPhone, anything less fluid would feel like a downgrade. If they can match the iPhone UI in terms of responsiveness and intuitive operation, I'd be interested.

Hope this is available on o2 in UK.

Looks are subjective, the people that think this is ugly probably think the HTC magic looks good:p

Ahhh you maybe right...it was in the Orange shop where i work in Canary Wharf...i didnt realise there was a difference but im pretty sure it said that it was an Android phone...tbf i wasnt really paying much attention.

But thinking back, it may very well have been the Dext phone rather than the Droid one.

Right after browsing my usual BB site ie crackberry...some guy on there managed to snag the Moto Droid...pretty sure its a pre-release and hes posted up some of his thoughts below:

Is SMS threaded? Can we see how a received text looks like and then one you compose?

Yes, SMS is threaded - you select the messages widget, which takes you to the messages you have - you then select one and it pops up with the entire thread - the way it displays the messages reminds me of AIM or any other messaging service you use. If you receive a message from someone not in your contacts list, you can just simply click on the "pic" next to the name and add it to your list.

Will you be able to load up a ripped DVD or other video in .mp4 format to see how it looks?

Sorry - my skills are not that technically advanced so I will not be able to rip a DVD.

I just want to know if the keyboard is any good. How tactile is the feedback, easy to press keys, or too easy to press adjacent keys to the one you want, etc.

This is the worst part of the phone. Each "button" isn't even a button. It reminds me of those calculators that have the plastic cover over the bubble buttons if you know what i mean. It's almost like they layered a vinyl cover over the keyboard and pressed in the borders for each of the keys. They are not individual buttons.

I still have to figure out how to keep number lock on the keyboard. If you want to type out a number chain (1234567), you have to push "ALT" between each number.. i'm sure there's a way to lock it. The on screen key board allows you to push "123" and lock in numbers/symbols and then switch back to abc when you push the button again.

It's not impossible to type, but remember I came from a Storm 1 so it will take me some getting used to typing on this keyboard.

Also, how good is the virtual keyboard in landscape and portrait mode?

Virtual keyboard is the same as apple's iphone. The screen is very good at picking up where you want to touch, down to a pinpoint. I have not had any issues. When you use the landscape keyboard, it actually lays out a string of possible words you are trying to type right about the keyboard so you can select the word without completing it.

When you select a textbox, let's say in the web browser, and you want to use the keyboard, the entire screen shifts away from the web page and moves to just the text box plus keyboard - you can then select "done" and it will move to the next text box on the webpage. Or you can push the "back arrow" button and it will take you back to the webpage without going to the next text box.

will I be able to use the phone in portrait or landscape for most apps. Kinda of how the storm uses it.

All of the apps I have used thus far (not many) have only been able to be used one way or another. I haven't downloaded any games yet but i'll try that later today. I'll come back to this quesiton.

I want the droid sound haha (you know when you go to Droid from Verizon Wireless and it says "droid").

Oh yeah.. the droid sound is definitely there and it is the default ringer when you get it. It sounds for emails, and txts.

How about the media player? I haven't seen that in videos yet.

I can't seem to find a media player on the phone. Errr.. kind of wierd - i'm looking for it right now. Never mind - just found it.

It's under gallery - I don't have any videos that are of movies, etc. however I just took a video. Extremely smooth, supposed to be dvd quality, however I haven't ported it out to a TV or a comp to check ou the quality on there, but it even looks good on the phone. NO LAG LIKE THE STORM.

Is the screen glass or plastic. I haven't found a definitive answer from any source. All previews and reviews say essentially "don't know yet"

Glass baby, all glass - and if it's not - it still feels like glass and that's all that matters.

- Sluggish interface, or silky smooth?

This is the quickest and smoothest interface i've ever used. There is absolutely no lag whatsoever when you use the OS. When you connect to the internet, the browser may experience ever so slight lag when you load up larger pages.

Video and pictures, NO LAG. It's amazing - i didn't think it would be possible coming from a Storm 1, but i guess that shows how crappy that phone is.

- Does it feel comfortable in the hand when using slideout keyboard?

Not really, the physical keyboard is off-centered because of the d-pad on the right so it will take some getting used to. It feels like your right hand has to STRETCH to reach some of the keys.

Plus the D-pad.... c'mon moto. This this is retarded. It's like a directional pad used to control the select icon which is horrible. When i first saw pictures, I thought that little bronze thing would be like the BBerry mouse tool on some phones where you can just finger over it .. but no - it's an actualy d-pad.

- How well does autocorrect work?

Ummmm - i don't think there is autocorrect? If there is, I can't locate it right now. I'll keep looking. As i stated above, the landscape keyboard strings across possible words above the keyboard. You don't make too many mistakes on this thing.

It doesn't look like there is any type of autocorrect when using the physical keyboard. I'll come back to this question also after some more hunting.

- Is Droid touchscreen keyboard better than Storms?

Yes! This touchscreen is awesome. The resolution is GORGEOUS. It is pin point accurate.

Picture this: It gets the ENTIRE screen for Crackberry.com - let's say you goto a thread and you want to get to page 3. This phone will let you select the tiny number "3" whil not zoomed in 9 out of 10 times with your fat fingers. I was amazed by the pin point accuracy.

Browser - how does it compare to BB's? iPhone's?
What method does the browser use to zoom in and out (pinch, tap, double tap)?

Browser is super nice - it is very responsive, it's just like using a real computer (almost). I can view any page I want without worrying whether there's a mobile version set up. It uses double tap only, however you can select whether you want to zoom in or out on the bottom right corner when you have the browser up.

How is the call clarity in quiet and noisy environments?
Call quality is good - I haven't been on the other end though. I should try this later.

Memory... What is.. Please take a pic of the about screen for memory..how about a side by side of storm2 and Moto Droid. How does the screen feel is it like the iphone

I will put up a pic of this tonight when i get home. Right now, with apps and everything installed I have 241MB available space with 14.83GB in the SD card.

n other videos it seemed hard keyboard needed to be used in landscape, can you get a video of it using the software keyboard loading up. If so please have the video start before the keyboard loads, it seems the only videos of it seen in landscape already have it loaded, one video the lady could not get it up...

I'll see if I can get this up tonight if I have time

-One video review referenced making a call not being user friendly because there are no hard keys to do this. Can you provide a video of making a call with the phone as if it were coming out of pocket, not used for a while/screen not active...also if you could just comment about how you feel about this ease of use.

Calling on this phone is pretty simple... you'd pull it out of your pocket, push the power button to turn the screen on (out of unlock mode), slide the slider to unlock the phone, click on the phone icon and dial the number or select out of contacts of call log or favorites. NO LAG LIKE THE SILLY STORM. BEAUTIFUL LAYOUT.

I'll get a vid of this tonight when i have time.

-I am interested in VOIP. Can you get this to work on the phone? I have seen SIPDROID, and heard GoogleVoice can be used for this. I want to be able to make a call back to the US, when in Europe using WIFI. So I want to find out if this is possible. You can just answer this one, or a video showing using google voice to make a call to another phone, with WIFI on and network off would be even better (I know this question takes a bit more effort, but I think others would be really interested in VOIP functionality aswell).

Err - i'll have to figure this out - sorry i'm a little retarded when it comes to VOIP.

Can you provide pictures/video of what the email app looks like tied to your gmail?

You can set up more than one email account - I still have to play around with this- I use Gmail so it was pretty straightforward for me. It looks like you can set up an exchange account very easily as well, however you may have to mess around with the email settings on the actual account. You can have one widget for each email aco**** and name it whatever you want, you can also have an integrated email inbox. I haven't set up anything using exchange but i'll try it tonight.

It looks like you can set how many times it checks for email (sorry if this is a dumb answer but i'm not too aware of how efficient it is on Bberry) - mine is currently set at 15minutes.

You can also incorporate your facebook account and it will import ALL of your friends into your phonebook with all of their contact info filled out. I thought that was cool.

Along those lines, would you mind integrating with a non-gmail mail server (hosted exchange, something like that) and let us know what sort of receive delay you have from the time the mail hits the server to the time it hits the Droid.

See above - i'll work on this question more tonight.

Does it use any software to sync music?

Will figure this out tonight - I don't have too many mp3's on my new comp so i'll have to set up my old one to test this.. need to port these songs over anyway so it will be a good excuse.

And a video of how well the compass works would be cool.

The compass is ok - you can select from different types "analog", "digital", "simple digital". It doesn't seem like it's too accurate when you leave it flat on your desk but it seems to work well when you walk around with it... i'll get a video of this up -

main and only concern is whats the battery life like on this device compared to a blackberry

THIS IS THE COOLEST THING - i'm not sure if this is on other devices. But you can actually go into the settings, about the phone, and battery. It will show you how much of the battery each and every thing that is running on the phone (or has been running) is using. It will tell you how long ago you unplugged the phone as well. The display uses up the most generally... This way, you can tailor which apps you want to use and you'll know how much each uses.

Some pretty interesting views there...not interested in getting it myself as im a blackberry man through and through.
