Hmm i have a female cockatiel...god knows why my brother bought my mum one because that damn bird is a noisy bugger...so much so that im seriously thinking about grabbing it and breaking its scrawny little neck to get it to shut the **** up...i mean every ****ing morning shes at it screaming like a banshee...

Failing that i think im just post an ad up giving her away for free because i and my mum just cant be bothered with her anymore.

get that bird out of a cage.

Dont mean to start an argument but my old house mate had Cockatiel's, it got so distressed about being in the cage that it killed its little borther and then continued to headbut the cage until it went brain dead and had to be put down.

Birds, the one things that fly in open air and enjoy freedom should not be caged. Almost as bad as putting a bear in a cage and making it dance.

HOWEVER, i dont meant to start an argument so please dont bit back as such, i just feel quite strongly about it. As im sure the oposition to my thoughts will too. lol ;-)

i agree, they shouldn't be cooped up but your house mates bird would be an exception from my experience, both mine and my nans cockatiels lived happy, long, healthy lives in a cage (let out frequently). by all accounts they're very sociable birds and aren't in the least bit bothered (generally). mine used to rub her beak against the bars (convict style :p) when she wanted to be let out and i did so it worked quite well, she only really asked to be let out once or twice a week and she'd hop right on back in her cage after a couple of hours.

the very fact that those two belonging to the OP have laid eggs only serves to highlight how happy they are and how well they are treated, animals will stop reproducing if stressed and unhappy.

lol! do they fly to your hand and stuff (like Timmy mallets used to!)

The white one does but only because he's been with us the longest :p the grey one can do a funky hand shake though:

They go in and out of the cage as and when they please, they sleep/eat and look after the eggs in the little house we made for them in the cage - it's nice and spacious and they have been trained to eat bird food and play with toys in the cage but they play with us outside the cage and go back in when they want or when the night is up. This is why they are so tame and people friendly. We've had them since babies :)

They're in their cage when nobody is available to keep constant watch on them, for their own safety they could get caught in something around the house or worse.

We had a very similar situation with our cockatiels years ago. Left alone, the parents coped extremely well apart from the last baby to hatch, which was rejected. We ended up with 4 being looked after by the parents, from 8 eggs, and one that we had to raise ourselves. It was hard work bringing up this little scrap of life. He looked like an alien at first, but once he feathered up he was the greatest as he was so tame. Whilst all his brothers and sister went off to new homes, he lived with us in the house, rarely in his cage as he was so friendly.

Well it's been almost a month since they started sitting on them so not long left I'd say :p

I'll probably come home from work one day to learn they have hatched!

Btw the eggs themselves were a lot smaller! I never got pics before as the male was quite protective of them but now he's more accepting I guess due to the timescale.

We've not touched the eggs, only peered into the house, they now sit on them when people are around too which is cool.

Ok a small update!

It would seem the eggs laid did not hatch in the end :( The mother stopped sitting on them last week so she knew they were dud eggs.

Perhaps she will lay more in time with happier results!

Meanwhile, they're back to being active and wanting headscratches etc, Pika has also learnt a new trick, say "Wings!" with treats in hand and he will show is awesome wings!

I really wanted a cockatiel when I was younger. We couldn't find any locally, so bought a blue male budgerigar instead. It was the single most evil creature I've ever come across. We aptly named it 'Bugger'.

It was nigh on impossible to catch, and when you did get hold of it, you were entering a world of pain.

It used to taunt my pet rats by sitting atop their cage and squawking at them. One day it escaped and taunted them whilst we were out. I couldn't find it anywhere, until I pulled out the rat cage to find it's body minus the head (which the rats had eaten).
