Ok, about a month ago i bought a Powercolor HD 4870, it was an awesome card but it was only the 512mb version. Then i saw this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-120-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=939 the other day and decided i'd get that and return the Powercolor. Why? Mainly because the Powercolor didn't exhaust heat out the back of the case but also because i wanted the extra memory. After ordering the card i found out OC.com aren't selling the model of card as shown in the picture, they're sending some crap version:
http://www.getprice.com.au/images/uploadimg/701/350__1_11X-HD4870-1GBR2.jpg which annoyed me a fair bit.

My question is, what third party coolers are available for the HD 4870 which will exhaust heat out the back of the case? Or if possible, where can i get one of those nicer standard coolers?

i had this happen to me too.

did you get yours from here?

the cooler vents all the hot air into the case which is way bad.

maybe you should complain.

i did but got fobbed off with a flimsy excuse.

i benched it the other day and it was running at 94deg.

maybe if there were more of us they would do something about it.#

Great, I ordered that XFX yesterday, I won't be too happy if it has that fan as I was already warned it would run hot, so purposely avoided it.

I know that the Zalman VF830 fits the board as the Gigabyte 4870 uses it, that review states it runs 30 degrees cooler than stock with the Zalman, but again, hot air is not blown out of the rear casing.

You have the right under the Sale of Goods Act/Distance Selling Regulations to reject the card if you are not happy as the picture does not match the goods recieved, with no disclaimer [not 'as described'], it is Overclockers responsibility to collect it or pay for return shipping costs. It seems I might be doing just that.

I use the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo, its so quite and does a great job of cooling the card, i have it set at 70% all the time keeps temps about 41 when gaming

It says in the terms and conditions, which you had to have accepted to be able to buy, that 'Product images are for illustrative purposes only.'

Nothing you can do mate. What i did is call up and change my order to this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-124-XF

Didn't want to have to spend that much but for an extra 30 odd quid it's worth it.

No, it's their fault that they haven't updated the picture which is quite obviously misleading a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't of purchased the card.

'Product images are for illustrative purposes only.'

No get them to change if you are not happy. This statement is meaningless and wouldn't hold any water if it came to court appearances.

Firstly, lets examine the english words.

Product images are used for illustrative purposes only. Of course they are. That's stating the obvious. What it says is that the pictures are used to illustrate what the product looks like. If the product doesn't look like that then the pictures aren't being used for illustrative purposes.

The idea that a picture can legitimately be used to show a product with a different form, fit or function than what the customer will receive is ludricrous.

In this case the function is different - the cooling and exhausting function differs from that advertised.

What this phrase could be legimately be used to convey is a cosmetic difference - the picture shows a blue fan but the one you get is red. In this case the colour is unimportant (but obviously this is not always the case).

The customer has a clear right to return the item at the retailer's cost (the retailer has to refund the item and all postages) because he has supplied something different than advertised.

I sympathise that it is XFX that has changed the design but in the UK the contract and responsibility lies with the retailer not the manufacturer.

I don't believe OcUK will have any problem with the return and refund though.

Cheers,

Nigel

In this case the function is different - the cooling and exhausting function differs from that advertised.

I think that this is the crucial point, the design of the heatsink and fan is so dramatically different between the two models that the retailer wouldn't have a leg to stand on in any legal dispute.

I don't believe OcUK will have any problem with the return and refund though.

I phoned customer service and queried the heatsink as I had ordered that XFX model.
The agent was not aware of the two different heatsink designs, obviously agents cannot be expected to be aware of the design details of hundreds of components, I mentioned that I would reject the model if it did not match the picture.

The agent reassured me that, under these circumstances, OcUK would pay the full costs of return shipping. However, with afterthought I cancelled the order as I didn't want the added complication of dealing with a rejected item.

I think it is fair to say that, in my experience so far (a few phone calls and forum replies), OcUK customer service is second to none, it certainly hasn't deterred me from future purchases.
