With a new series due in weeks and Top Gear Live shortly to hit London and Birmingham expect to see a flurry of activity from the team.

Having said that, news that the Top Gear test track lap record has just been smashed surprisingly has nothing to do with the TV show.

Frustrated at being denied the opportunity to prove itself on the programme, British sports car builder Ultima took things into its own hands and hired the track out. The result? A lap time to humble a Ferrari FXX.

A Ferrari FXX with Michael Schumacher at the wheel, no less, the seven-time world champion famously posting a 1min 10.7sec time in the track-only Enzo-derived mega Ferrari. So, what about the Ultima GTR720?

Well, using pukka datalogging and, like all Top Gear lap records, taken from a standing start the GTR720 managed an astonishing 1min 9.9sec. Unlike the FXX the Ultima is fully road legal too.

Interesting that they still haven't managed to get one on the show.

Thanks, thats what i needed, i can't open the link you see....

So yes, its worthy of going on the board and TG need to get one on the show.

Indeed , but being able to drive over a speed bump isn't a legal requirement hence my question.

Not a legal requirement but who would design a car that couldn't get over speed bumps. It's okay for a track car as chances are it won't be driven to and from a track but a road car that can't get over a small speed bump would be crazy.

The reason for my first post in the thread:

But will it drive over a speed bump?

Is in reference that the ultima is a very low car, they can drive it round the track till the makers blue in the face, if it can't drive over a speedbump or isn't on road legal tyres the time is void and can't go on the board.

Unlike the FXX the Ultima is fully road legal too.

Was the ops reply to that, but the fact a cars road legal has no bearing on the fact it can drive over speedbumps, a radical is road legal and won't get over a speedbump.

So erm yes.........

If this is allowed on, the Caparo T1 should be on it too.

The T1 can do speedbumps. Caparo even offered to put one anywhere on the top gear track, at their own expense, and still take the lap record.

Exactly, i feel someone at TG central doesn't want these type of cars going on the board.
