Hi guys, i'm up for renewal on O2 in a few weeks, I've just been bought an Ipo touch and as a result the Iphone is now on the radar, but I'm also eyeing up the BB 8520 and the new Bold.

My question is, if I just buy one of these phones on simplicity and select my free bolt on as unlimited web, will both phones work in terms of browsing but also terms of receiving email?

Cheers guys

Unlimited web bolt on will be fine for iPhones but you would need the Blackberry (BIS) bolt on for any of the Blackberry you decide to get. Without BIS you won't be able to receive e-mails.

I see, I'm a gold customer with o2, but I have a feeling that if I go for either of these phones I'm going to get bent over a barrel

I'll have one of these babies in my hands later tonight...well depending on if my voda contact doesnt get stuck at work...looking forward to having a play on it as i have one on pre-order myself..

Spawn, pics and a write up would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, I'd like Pics/Write-Up of the Bold 9700 too. As I think I'll get it now to maybe replace my iPhone 3G.

Sorry no pics as it wasnt mine but a friend of mine who works for Voda network ops...he tends to get these devices pretty early...3 weeks ago i played with a Blackberry Storm2 which i think is pretty damn good...so much so that im getting one hopefully by tommorrow fingers crossed through him as i cant buy one offline through voda at the moment and the price he has given is pretty cheap compared to others that are selling it offline.

Anyhow had a play with it last night and i have to say its pretty damn good....is it better than the Bold 9000??..depends really...i like the small form factor, the keys are very bold like so i liked the fact they kept that...its quite a bit smaller than my Bold so took some time getting used to. The trackpad is an absolute god send...geez forget about trackball issues ie getting dirt and the trackball getting stuck like it does now and again on my Bold...very easy to navigate and make selections.
The OS on his was a bit buggy but thats to be expected...one of the reasons why Voda have held back their shipments at the moment but from what i saw and played with it...its definitely a step in the right direction...one thing i will say is that the phone is very fast and smooth...mainly due to the fact that it has 256mb of app memory compared to the measly 128mb of app memory that comes with the Bold 9000...the CPU is the same as it is in the Bold 9000 so is very quick...i think the Bold has the fastest cpu out of all the BB's out on the market.

All in all i was very very impressed with the 9700...its nice, well built, smaller than the Bold 9000 and lighter...its similar to the 8900 curve but a much better handset. Its around the same thickness as the Bold...maybe slightly thinner.

One good thing i liked the most was the sd card slot is now easier to access..it sits on top of the battery ie just under the camera...also the battery cover is rock solid ie it fits tightly...perhaps a bit too tight but a good change nonethless seeing as previous Bolds had loose battery covers. Also the 3.2mp camera is much better than the 2mp that comes with the Bold 9000...still not as great as the 5mp or even 12mp camera phones out there but honestly you dont buy a BB purely for its camera:p...but its definitely better and takes better quality pics than the 9000 Bold.

The thing i didnt like was the faux leather backing but unlike the previous bold...its only the middle of the battery cover that has it...so is not a big deal really...its a very well built device and looks the part ie keeping in line with the Bold high end look.

Would i get one??...yes without a doubt...in fact ive already pre-ordered a sim free unbranded 9700 last week for £400 which i think is an excellent price...hoping to get it by the 3rd week of Nov as a couple of places are saying 11th of Nov but they arent 110% sure...doesnt bother me when its coming as ill have my Storm2 to play with in the meantime.

Thanks Spawn, is the new 9700 going to be out on PAYG or is it pay monthly, only? I ask because I would like to purchase it on o2.

Wont be PAYG but on contract...you can buy it sim free and unlocked for around £400...dont know why u would want to stick with O2, terrible 3G coverage in all honesty.

But no it wont be on PAYG as far as i know...if it ever makes it to PAYG then expect to pay stupid money for it.

Most of my friends/family are on o2 so it benefits more. £400 sim free sounds ok, will have a look into it. Thanks for the reply.

No probs...ive seen one for £380 but stock isnt in for another 2-3 weeks but that could change etc.

Canary Wharf but i dont work for any mobile networks...i just have a few very close contacts that work within the mobile phone industry...plus a lot of my info comes from crackberry;)

Looks like the Voda branded 9700's will be out by this fri...stock is expected tommorrow and might be shipping for fri delivery:).

Nope nothing yet...stock of the 9700 was supposed to be coming in today but nothings showed up so its looking more likely to be Monday now...RIM have screwed Voda up twice now and they arent happy...seems like Rogers in Canada have got their 9700's and people already have their devices...so unlike last time when Europe got the 9000 bold first then N America...it seems like RIM have decided to give the first retail units to Rogers.

From what i have been told by my contact in Voda...theres a very very good chance that Voda will have the Bold2 9700 by Mon and also the new stock of the Storm2, which have been slightly revised...i already have 2 Storm2's but im giving them back on Monday to be replaced by the new revised units....i dont know whats been revised but it seems like the first batch of S2's have signal problems...keeps dropping signal...both of mine havent done that yet but id rather not take the chance of that happening:).

O2 i dont know anything about, i imagine it should be out mid nov for them along with Orange and Tmobile...so about the 3rd week of Nov or end of Nov. I should have mine by then but ive bought mine sim free and unlocked for £400 so should have it by the 3rd or 4th week of Nov.
