what happened to the proton accelerator in switzerland?

We really are heading into the unknown with the LHC. It'll eventually be firing those particles harder and faster than we've ever done before, who knows what could happen. It's quite exciting.

im a little nervous about it tbh.high chance of something bad happening tbh as we know so little about quantum physics as well as space etc. but still.. if you dont ask you dont get.

Wow - this topic is really interesting. What are they hoping to gain from smashing these partials together?

The main thing they're looking for (the reason it was built in fact) is a particle called the Higgs Boson, aka the god particle. This particle, if found, would prove the Standard Model for particle physics is correct, and explain the origin of mass in the universe.

Interestingly, if the Higgs isn't found by the LHC - it never will, and it will prove the Standard Model is incorrect. This means all those scientists go back to the drawing board.

Absolute horse tosh, it was built to be a particle accelerator/collidor, nothing more or less. THe higgs Boson is just a theoretical piece of mumbo jumbo that sounded good on the news. They needed a "hook" to get funding. Real scientists simply want to smash crap together and see what they find. Infact the best scientists in the world wouldn't be looking for a single thing, because you'd be not looking for other patterns, too narrow a focus and you can miss key things.

All they are looking for is science, no matter what it is. Theres almost certainly smaller bits to find and they want to find new stuff.

Unfortunately most real breakthroughs tend to come from simply looking. How many diseases have been cured by scientists just looking randomly, as opposed to going after a single goal, most of them. We'll pump trillions into cancer research and it will end up being someone trying to invent a new microwave who finds 2 people on staff were exposed to z-wave radiation and their cancer has gone.

Its good enough for me they are just looking, if they don't find something though funding will be harder and harder to recieve to keep it open and start other projects without specific goals.

Its easy for a politician to sell 2 billion in funding for breast cancer research to their tax payers, but selling them 200million for just pure science without a goal is almost impossible.

It works fine, but enables time travel, which given infinite time leads to a 1:1 chance of it being sabotaged by time travellers who don't like time travel, possibly because of the long queues at check-in.

Gags aside, they are experiencing worms theory, which states: "If you line up enough worms, to reach from here to the moon, one of them will wiggle and spoil it."

Know all this for a fact? They are looking/testing for several things.....Higgs Boson, dark matter, dark energy, anti-matter (I think) to name but a few.

Like what?

CityLink delivered leggo sets to the LHC site and the system still cannot be used,

James May however now has a new series, no one from the BBC was available to comment but an insider says James has been stunning production staff,

turning up in what can only be described as pristine examples of vintage cars and out of this world examples of future transport systems.

Do you want to cite someone who actually knows what he's talking about, or can we disregard this?

It was on tv last night, hawkins universe, its not a high chance of anything happening but a very minute chance, a physics bod said,

If it works as Hawkins predicts many years ago, minature black holes will be produced and then evaporate and decay, If one of those black holes dose not decay and starts to pull in atoms from say the atmosphere in theorey it could consume the earth, this is why the experiment needs to be tightly controlled

So, as I see it they are doing the experiment to prove Hawkins is right with his theorey, the down side if he is wrong we are all going to be a little cramped in the new home we will have, a singularity is smaller than an atom, just keep off my lawn ok ;).

Sounds good, can finally be within touching distance of Megan Fox ;)
