AVG or Avast or any other free anti-virus?

just installing AVG 9 and it recommends uninstalling Avast, but i don't know which one to uninstall or does anyone have another recomendation? thanks

Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free...
I was looking at a friends pc the other day, it had AVG on, I removed it and installed MSE, ran a Quick scan and found 2 Trogans that AVG had missed!!!

just been looking at reviews, and it seems to have slow scanning speeds, are there any faster good anti-virus programs?

i use AVG!

was the AVG up to date?

Yes the AVG was upto date

As for slow scanning speeds, I would not normally notice as I have an SSD and it Flies through that LOL, however, on the friends machine (oldish laptop) it was slower but no more so that AVG did the previous scan?

All antivirus scan speeds will be slow if they are doing a good job. I'd go with either MS Security Essentials or Avast Antivirus if I were you. I use Avast personally.

Meh, so AVG missed two. MSE missed a well known one for me but had the cheek to tell me that if I was using a paid-for MS product they'd have detected it. I don't give machine space to apps like that, tbh. BTW what's wrong with the "Keep all AV questions in here" thread at the top of the forum?

No, it missed it entirely and after submitting the sample to MS, that was the reply I received. The full email is in the main AV thread for all to see if you care to check.

just uninstalled both AVG and Avast

and installed Avira Antivir now the computer is way faster and Antivir has a better detection rate than AVG or Avast

MSE is the new king IMO. Slow scan times are not a problem as they are not something you do very often or when you are actually sat at your computer. Otherwise it has been reviewed well.

Wow, MSE is new to me, I've been loading AVG onto people's PCs for a long time now. Looks like I might need to change!

I installed mse on a computer for a guy from work and he decided to uninstall it and use avg.

he said it ran quicker but imo he's left his security door ajar. avg took over well from mcafee but I think unfortunately microsoft has released a good defense programme
