£4k 5 or 7 Series

I am thinking that a 10 year old SE will not be a fantastic drive anyway though, and as a wafter it makes sense to opt for the 7? New or in good condition i agree totally, but at this age? :)

I agree in part but the same applies to the 7 - these need suspension refreshes as well. I like the E38 as you well know but I think the E39 is a genuinely bettercar than the E38 - under the skin they are different cars.

I've never driven a 10 year old E39 or E38 though - they were all much newer when I was looking - but I don't see why the E39 would degrade any quicker.

Looks nicer. It's an undesireable 535i which goes some way to explaining its price, which is cool. Horrible fake E60 M5 wheels though which is a real shame.

But he has the 66's so I can flog those hideous things on the bay for £400 or so.

Like fox i tend to be a snob when it comes to previous owners, i wouldn't want to buy off someone with the mentality of fitting crap wheels to it :/

Haha, at that rate Id still be here next year. Its a 4k car not a Veyron. Ill be spending more time in the spring when I buy my "proper" car.

No accounting for taste. He mihgt lovingly lick them clean for all we know.

TBH mate, the best course of action here is to start by calling all of the facelift adverts. Its a much better looking car, with nicer everything, a better newer engine, etc etc. You wont get a mint one, but as you say its a 4k car at the end of the day and i'd put money on at least one of them being tidy enough to be a pleasure to prance around in for the time being. Looking at the way the market seems to have been for the last 6 months you might not even lose anything on it :)

If after that you dont like the sound of any of them, go back to the older models.

The problem is it isn't a £4k car, it's a £40k car as far as servicing, parts and insurance are concerned.

If you want something cheap and big get an old Vauxhall with a big lazy engine.

So why are you buying a £4k Bimmer?

Bit nosey arent you?

Because I'm gathering a 25k deposit for my next car and 4k is the cash I have available and am prepared to spend until the spring.

If it costs me 500 quid to service I couldnt give a rats ass.

Lots of people tend to buy cheap cars with little regard to running costs. Look at mine for example, cost only £8500, but then has cost about that again over 2 years in ongoing costs but this doesn't notice as it is an ongoing trickle.

Reason being that i didn't want to spend an appreciable amount of money on something as unimportant as a car while i was gathering a housing deposit together. Sounds like this guys situation is similar. My view is changing over time though i must admit.

one more q

when he started it, it was a little bit "clattery" at the top end for a few seconds. I presume this is normal while the oil gets up there?

Not really, your posted a fairly odd response (in regards to running costs) on a public forum, you didn't have to respond, but if you don't want your financial purchases mulled over keep it behind closed doors.

But enough of that, i didn't realise this was a thread where the OP is not a ***** with no idea of running costs (i wondered why Fox was being so civil :D).

If your looking for something refined in the short term and need a good image i.e. respectable, why not get something like a Lexus? I would have thought most people buying these cars will be worried about running costs and you owning it for a short period may make people think your trying to shift a lemon and cut your losses.

Or is it a case of wanting to try a V8 BMW and not having to worry too much about costs as your ownership will be so short?

As it turns out Im going to see this tomorrow and think Ill be having it.

Spent about an hour on the phone to him tonight, proper car nut. Loves his beemers and has allsorts including a concours 205.

He needed 2 new tyres and those wheels came up on ebay for £170 local pickup only so he nabbed them and saved himself a few quid.

It missed the last service stamp as he did it himself, due a disagreement with the dealer as they wouldnt stamp the book due his pollen filters being in mahl boxes rather then BMW. Something to use as leverage I think for a few quid off.

I keep looking at that advert and can't find anything I dont like bar those wheels. The pollen filter thing is a valid story, my local dealer decided last service to refuse to stamp my book as I hadn't had the microfilters changed even though its a seperate tickbox. They claimed it was BMW policy.

So Scothall Hampshire did the service instead without issue.

That ad certainly gives me the confidence that were I looking to buy, I'd view that.
