iPhone 3GS vs Nokia N86

I was in a big dilemma over the phone to o2 for these two phones. I was offered the following:

iPhone 3GS 16GB - 24 Month contract :rolleyes: 34 quid a month and 87 quid for handset (standard amounts - would not budge on price)

N86 - 18 Month contract 33 quid a month free phone. (free net, 600 minutes, 1000 messages)

I stupidly? went for the iPhone as its what I have wanted for a while now. Have I made the right choice considering I was offered an N86 for free?

I currently have a good condition n95 8gb which I will sell on for circa £110.

Thoughts?

Ok, since you want an inferrior product, I vote for iphone, simply because then you can join the other 21million people who love it.


Also, you do realise that the n900 has on screen keyboard? Then you can always use match-box keyboard (application) if you don't like the one it comes with. In fact I almost never use the physical keyboard. Mainly because the screen resolution is not retardedly small, but hey, not my problem :o. Anyway, go for iphone, I won't pollute this thread with saying how rubbish everything is compared with n900 ;).
 
I have done exactly the same as you, toss up between the 2 phones, went with the Iphone in the end.

Id have gone for the iphone as well but not on O2;)...i would have probably changed to Orange and told O2 that if they wanted to listen that is ie are they willing to let me go to another provider etc...it owuldnt have hurt to try if you didnt.

N86 is a pretty old phone now isnt it??...if i was in your position i would have probably went for the iphone although getting locked into a 24mth contract then paying a further £87 is a bit of a rip off if you ask me.

I imagine you would have a 7-14 day cooling off period so try the iphone out and see how you get on with it...if its what u want then stick with it...if not then return it:).

While 3gs has very similar specs to 900, limitations of the iphone os, together with a rubbishly small screen, make it an inferrior product for my needs. But yeah, I am a complete n810 fanboy, 900 is just a natural upgrade progression.
 
Expensive though, seems they're around £450.

Considering selling my i7500 and picking one of these up.

That or I'll just get an N86 though work or something.

Damn dude, you assume that the N86 is awful (seemingly without having used it) then big up a phone that hasn't even been released yet.

@OP:

iPhone vs N86 very much depends what you're looking for in a phone. iPhone is obviously very much a fun phone to use, although its shortcomings as a camera and it's limiting OS are problems. Quite expensive too.

N86 is very much a traditional phone (although its S60 OS is tremendously powerful). This isn't necessarily a bad thing - Nokia have had several generations to refine the dual-slider form factor and the S60v3 OS, so it more or less has the kinks worked out. The camera is fantastic - arguably the best on any phone. It's only let down by having an LED flash, although the larger aperture helps to minimise the problem. If you were very happy with your N95, you'll probably continue to have a good experience with this phone. Don't let the N8x moniker fool you - it's the spiritual successor to the N95.

I can't really recommend one over the other as they really are very different handsets. Perhaps you could post back with your usage patterns?

Ok, I actually looked it up n86 and its a normal phone. I am assuming, OP wants a toy phone, otherwise he would not have mentioned Iphone in the first place. In hindsight, perhaps I should have expanded on the rubbish comment, but that is why its called hindsight.

And yes, I am "bigging up" n900, because as far as toys go, its a far better toy then iphone (bigger screen, same hardware, open platform), it just has a phone chip in it. Would prefer it not to have one, but thats another rant.

If op wants just a phone and not a toy, go for the cheaper one (or say just a cheaper standard phone), purely for phone features, I keep reading how crap Iphone is at being an actual phone..

tbh I could sell the iphone on the bay for circa 420 and buy an n900 outright. I ll wait to have a play in the shops with one before hand though but dam it looks ugly compared to the iphone.

Id have to agree, at least 810 is not the prettiest devices out there, though does it matter if a phone is ugly or not seeing as most of the time it sits in your pocket anyway.

You really are being a muppet with the petty iPhone bashing aren't you. The N900 is resistive (which no matter how 'sensitive', ill never be as finger friendly), is based on a currently underdeveloped OS with only a sprinkling of apps available (thanks to the tablets it's based on), and we have no idea how good the keyboard is yet.
