I've read a lot of the 40k books so far and was wondering what else to try in this universe - any recommendations please?

Here's a list of the 40k material I've read so far but what else do peeps recommend in this category:-

All Gaunts Ghosts books
Eisenhorn
Ultramarines trilogy
All HH books
Lord of the Night
Grey Knights trilogy

I've not read any of the Warhammer old world stuff but are they any good and again if so which ones?

Thanks in advance

Avoid the Space wolf books like the plague. Even when I read them as a geeky 15 y/0 fanboy, I appreciated that they were among the worst books I've ever read.

Since then I haven't really bothered with any of them.

I'm currently reading my way through the Horus Heresy novels. Just finished Descent of Angels.
So far i'm really impressed.

Some of the new Codex's are worth buying. There a lot better then when i collected (third edition).

Maybe Gotrek and Felix books? They are not bad and you can get 3 of them in one book now I think...

I would strongly suggest any of the Ciaphas Cain novels, you can get the first three in an omnibus i believe called Heroes of the Imperium. Quite funny at times as well.

Try the three Ravenor books, some of the characters are carried over from Eisenhorn, same author etc.

The Gaunts Ghosts spinoff Double Eagle is pretty good too.

Just finished Storm of Iron and Salamanders. Storm of Iron gives so some insight into the Honsou (Dead Sky, Black Sun). Salamanders I liked very much.

Agree the Space Wolf books are a bit ho hum. Blood Angel ones are OK.

Soul Drinkers trilogy are very good books, wasn't sold on the 4th novel.

Titanicus is cool. Hoping there are more Titan stories.

The Last Chancers is a decent read.

Dark Apostle and Dark Disciple are good too.

Also short story books
Let the Galaxy Burn
Planet Kill (not read yet)
Heroes of the Space Marines (not read yet)

I've also got Deathwing although I don't think they sell it anymore. The Deathwing story doesn't really match the current Dark Angel stories IIRC. Haven't read it for a while.

How are the Eisenhorn and Guants Ghost books? I mainly only get Space Marine related books but I'm running out :)

I've got 35 books 3 of which are trilogies and I'm currently reading The Killing Ground.

Is that the Inquisition War?

I've read the first of the that trilogy which was good :) (there was also a really old Inquisition trilogy from about 15 years ago, which I think my brother has somewhere).

The Gaunts Ghost books are very good, although I must confess I think i've missed the last couple :(

Shocked to see Angels Of Darkness by Mr Gavin Thorpe hasn't been mentioned, an absolute classic 40k novel and a MUST read for any Dark Angels fans.

Random question, what was the differences between the different space marines eg ultra marines, blood angels etc. If we compare it to our army was just like different regiments but maybe with there own history.

Also aint horus heresy, something about the first chaos fighting the emperor. Im only going by what i can remember when i used to play wh40k back years ago.

Some Marines are pure Codex (fully by the books).
Some have minor variations, and a few minor variations.

In the fluff for example, due to the way the genetic adaptations/extra organs are produced (cloned from the founder of the chapter usually), some of the chapters have mutations/genetic defects - for example the Blood Angels from memory are rumoured to drink blood, others have non codex structures/tactics (Space Wolves), and some are extremely strict about keeping to the letter of the Codex (Mentors).

I think it's the Blood Angels who have the death company, basically marines who have started to go berserk, so they become effectively a suicide unit taking on the most dangerous missions :) (and have various special rules).

Basically different regiments, but with "technical" reasons to explain why they aren't perfect by the book marines :p (it also lets GW sell you 2+ armies with almost identical models apart from the shoulder pads/commanding officers, and paint jobs :p)

Aye HH was about one of the early Primarch leading a revolt against the emperor, which led to a lot of the marine chapters of the time becoming Chaos Marines (traitor legions), and the Emperor getting badly wounded, thus he started using the Emperor's Chair life support :)

as i remember it :) (I don't play Marines, and it's been a while since i read the full fluff;))

GG are absolutely fantastic - just don't get too attached to any one particular character!

Currently reading Eisenhorn and it's one of Dan Abnett's best work imo.

Storm of Iron & Salamander were two books I was looking at getting at some point.
