Hi,

Just got the car back from its MOT and there are a few advisories regarding corrosion. The most worrying is the brake pipes all around the car are corroding.

I asked him how much it would cost to get them replaced and he said its a time consuming job (6+ hours) and I'd be better off cleaning them up with a wire brush and greasing them. I forgot to ask what grease to use, i have copper slip or some black moly grease. Will either of these do?

TIA.

Just thought, i think i have some waxoyl somewhere, would that work? Or do they get hot?

I really hope i don't end up having to have them repaired, sounds like its going to cost a fortune :(.

Should be fine.

Just de-rust them and paint them with some hammerite tbh.

Cheers, i am getting some hammerite soon to paint the callipers so I'll do the pipes as well. Then slap a load of waxoyl/grease over the top to make sure.

Lovely jubly think I will do this to the bikes back break untill I can get braided ones for it.

any high temp grease is fine. smear it on and it'll do the job. avoid catching the discs or pads with it though as you'll er... 'know what i mean'. lol

The brake lines corroded on my Mondeo, had to have them replaced in the end as one had actually rusted through (on a 300 mile trip back from holiday!).

How bad is the corrosion? Last thing you want is to paint them and say to yourself "happy days, few quid saved" and then for one to fail when braking at speed...

The mechanic said its not that bad really, nothing to worry about. I think they must just be in the first stages of corrosion and need to be treated now to stop it getting any worse. I asked him if they needed replacing and how much would it set me back and he suggested cleaning them up and greasing, so it doesn't sound too bad. They weren't picked up on last time it was MOT'd at the same place last year either.

Although i don't like the sound of one failing at speed either. I'll have to get under the car and have a good look around.

How much did it cost to have them replaced on your Mondeo?

i should think any form of grease will work.

i just changed the hard lines on my bimmer and it took about 2 1/2 hrs without a ramp. it was a hateful job, everything was rusted solid, excelt the pipe, whihc had a hole in it!

I haven't got a breakdown on the price, but i paid £250 for new brake lines (x2), a new set of numberplates and an MOT, so i'd say £160-£180 ish.

ive signed up just to reply to this.

Dont use greese on the break pipes, it will not stay on and protect them, Clean the rust off carefully with sandpaper and paint them with something like hammerite or underseal.

For painting your calipers hammerite wont last very long due to the heat and the break dust, you need a high temp paint for them, i would recomend using proper caliper paint like this http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=ROAD&pcode=AILEBCP-BL

6+ hours to replace brake pipes? You could easily do them all in 4-5 hours MAX.

But rub them down to clean metal with a wire brush, emry cloth. Then use white grease in a spray can, or you can paint them in hammerite.
