electrican needed for advice please.

How long have you been in this house? If you had 3 bulbs in the same room blow in 1 day then it may be worth changing the switch. Dirty contacts in the switch can cause the bulbs to flicker on and off when switched which makes them blow faster - or so i have been told. Kinda makes sense to me but not sure whether it's actually true...

Caged, oddly enough the Ikea R50's I've got seem to have settled down - it took about 6 months of them taking ages (1 minute+) to reach a good brightness, but now they reach it within a few seconds (a cheapy Morrisons energy saving R50 seemed to reach working brightness pretty fast from the word go).

I'm never using filament R50's again after all the hassle we had with them:)
I had them for a while but this was a few years back so they might have gotten better. Another reason for replacing them was because I could detect the flicker on them quite easily. Very happy with the Halolux in there now, put out a warmer light too which I prefer. Yes they use a bit more than CFL but I think it's worth it.

thats makes perfect sense as the lights in the kitchen were flickering for a month or so before i replaced them and then they blew again.
Lived at my house since march 09

Perhaps the original bulbs in the kitchen were higher quality than the ones you replaced them with and so lasted from March? Switches don't cost much, and you certainly don't need an electrician to replace it. Just buy a new switch from B&Q or Wickes etc, turn off the lighting circuit and replace the switch - note which wires go where and you won't have any difficulty :)

are these lights controlled by a 6amp switch or a dimmer? Check the switchs are note arching. Also, check that if there is a neutral tooked away in a connector block behind the switch, if there is then just make suse it hasnt come out of its block. Hals seen to want to die together, often when 1 blews, a couple will follow. If your still having problems it may pay for you to have the circuit tested. Shouldnt be any more than £80.
