HTC Hero, coming July on Orange and T-Mobile, makes me want!

your message tones can be set under menu / settings / sound and display / notification sound, the email sound can be set if you have the htc email app open - menu / more / settings and the notification setting in there will give you your email sound :)
hope that helps

cant explain that one m8, sometimes it does require a tilt of the screen forwards to get it to force into landscape

Yep you were right. Thanks again. :D Just one more annoying problem is there anyway to keep the backlight on during a call it keeps switching off after a few seconds?

Have an iphone 3gs, my contract runs December and i was looking at other phones like it, want to change as i like new toys and iphones are getting "to chav" now for me.
Few things i would like to know,
How easy is it to sync music to it? Guess itunes dont work but what are the options?
Battery life compared with a 3GS?
Volume for ringtones/speaker phone?
Any good satnav apps and gps signal strength.
How is the android app store content and price?
I like the look of the phone and ive heard good things about Android firmware, also i can get it on better contract than my iphone is on now.

not sure if there is for it to be on all the time, but pressing menu twice will unlock the screen, only found it out recently and for a long time thought the only way to unlock the screen was pressing end call, which was useless for call centres when you have to keep pressing 1/2/3 keys.

The postman has just dropped off a Hero for me!

I'm coming from 1 month using a Blackberry 8900 (previous phone was a little Nokia 8310 ancient!). As good as the Blackberry is it just wasn't for me. I had a little devil on my shoulder saying 'send it back, get the hero', I was like 'no no I'll be fine with this, I'm sure of it, its fine', the voices just kept getting louder and louder and in the end I was out of my return period. Doh!

Anyway I've bought a Hero off ebay and I'm about to charge up the little fella. I'm just wondering whats the first thing I should do? Head over the the HTC website and download the latest ROM upgrade for Orange?

Also, Until my animal package changes over next week I don't want to be using any data because its still set up for Blackberry. I've got wifi in my house, so I guess the Hero can use wifi for the internet, but how do you know that its using wifi and not data from my contract? Is there any apps to monitor data being used?

Cheers.

you want netcounter m8, oh and add the widget from settings so you can turn off mobile data that way you'll know that you're only using wifi :D
check you current rom first as you may have an unbranded phone and therefore will require a generic ROM :)

Hi Torch.

So there is a setting built in that can turn off data. Nice.

No its a Orange branded one mate.

I've read some horror stories about battery life, hows everyone else's battery life?

Also, my orange package at the moment is Panther, which is a blackberry tailored package I think. What will happen when I put my sim in the Hero? The Hero won't flip out will it. My package is getting switched over next week.

battery life is quite good for me as im usually at my pc so i can charge it on usb etc, charging cradles are quite handy
as for the mobile data widget you can find it in + / HTC Widget / Settings and select the Mobile Network one this will allow you to control the mobile data connections :)
its also handy to have gps control as well :)
not sure about your sim tho, it wont affect the basic functions on the phone tho :)

Are these devices contract specific? Eg I have a T-mobile Solo contract (600 mins, unltd SMS and WnW) could I just pop the sim into a G2 and off I go with the Unlimited Data etc or do T-Mobile have to be notified update/change any settings?

The battery will last you a day, which is all you need really.

:/

Standby will last quite a while, like over a week.

Heavy usage seems me getting 2-3 days from my battery.

Constant usage gets me one day, quite how you can say what you've said with no real clarification is beyond me.

Do I really have to clarify? How odd.

I leave my phone on charge overnight. When I'm going to bed, it's usually in the red saying 'connect charger', so I leave it on charge overnight ready for the next day.

It is configured to check two email accounts, though, both my work and gmail.

I'm hardly using it 'constantly' though. I wouldn't get any work done if I did.

Just wanted to know this really, anyone have any opinions?

Thanks ;)

I've not tried Syncing it with anything, but it's easy enough to dump music onto the SD card, it'll automatically pick up the tracks. USB Transfer is as fast as if you plugged the SD card straight into a USB slot, unlike with some of the previous HTC phones.

Yes you do, because you could mean leaving it on standby for 1 day drains it, or running loads of apps with music blaring and the screen on full brightness, GPS on etc. etc. You have a duff battery then because that is not right at all! I can be texting, downloading emails, listening to music all day and only use ~50% battery.

if i use mine heavilly it lasts around 3 days, thats with 2 email accounts and mobile data turned on from 8am - 5pm then over to wifi from 5:30 to around 11pm. also surfing web etc and texting :)

was going to root the phone but might wait for 2.0 ? is there any word that the newer roms are locked and you cant run a recovery image?

I don't use the phone particularly out of the ordinary, so I find it strange that you require clarification. It just takes a few widgets downloading data every few minutes (e.g. BBC, Twitter, Facebook) and it's easy to see how the battery can get drained.

I sincerely doubt it's a 'duff' battery, as you so eloquently put it. I'm sure I could get the battery to last a bit longer, but with standard use it's lasting just over a day at the moment, which like I say is perfectly enough.

It really is strange how some people take others' experiences with mobile phones as some sort of personal afront. It's just a phone.

Just trying to point out that is not normal for the phone/battery, as I say, mine last ages compared to yours, as does Torch's by the sounds of things, so it would suggest your battery isn't running properly or something majorly drains it.

One of the other guys on here had a problem with his battery on his fairly new one, so I wouldn't dismiss it as not being dodgy, but may well be fine, just sounds odd is all.
