Spectacular Space Combat Game Required

If you want an easy to get into space fighter then I'd recomend dark star one, it's not quite as pretty as X3, but a lot easier to get into. It's biggest issue is no widescreen support though, so it's either black bars left and right or oval planets :(

Freespace 2 with the latest mod (there's one big one that re-does textures etc).

Still looks great.

Edit - I see Mac has found the thread on it. Best atmosphere in a space game ever.

DarkStar One. Great little game :)

Evochron Renegades: Don't expect much from the main missions but as far as exploration, combat and general 'tootling about' goes I thought it well worth the money. No updates since the beginning of the this year so...

Evochron Legends: Just fond this, graphics look improved over Renegades. There's a demo available so give it a go.

Arvoch Conflict: ????

Evochron Legends is his "current" game and it's the one to go for. The game is very much in the "sandbox" mold, but does have missions and supports multi user play as well. It's a remarkable effort from a one-man developer and his support, through the forums, is amazing.

get yourself nexus: the jupiter incident, hugely under-rated game IMO, to be fair though its not 'fly around and shoot ****' its more tactical but great game ;)

Freespace 2: Simply awesome. Buy this and get modding.
Freelancer: OK but a bit repetitive, trading in particular is underdeveloped.
Darkstar One: Not a bad little jaunt although the dogfighting isn't quite up to scratch, often you just end up circling your opponent endlessly. The buddy combat is great though (AI controlled characters helping you out).

I war 2.

Great space game. Throwing a second shout to starlancer, allways do, total action done with a lot of style.

Freespace 2 is indeed a very good game but it looks really dated. I loved the single player on freelancer and played it for months, getting the best ship in the game with rank 10 prototype weaponry which basically 1 shot anything. I loved how simple the combat was on freelancer but then again enjoyed the bit more depth that freespace 2 gave to the combat (ironic and contradictory I know lol)

Both look pretty dated now though in comparison to the likes of X3 :(
