Hi all,

thought I ask you guys here since I am pretty sure you got more experience then the guys at HP Tech desk. Got myself a HP Laptop a few days ago, the DV7-2045EA version. Had Vista Home Premium SP1 on it so I started to update it as you normally do, considering there is a SP2 out now.. anyway, did all the updates and installed a few programs, and then went to bed.

Turning the lappy on in the morning I noticed no sound, hmm that's strange. So checked device manager and saw now yellow question marks indicating a trouble, still checked the sound drivers and they all said working fine. Then went to the control panel and found the sound properties, right clicked on the Default device and then asked it to play the test sound, was promptly given a box saying "Failed to play test tone". So, just to make sure, put a DVD in and played it, picture was fine, audio.. none! Then I turned to the Internetz and tired to find some solution to my little problem but couldn't find anything that helped.

Then I thought, lets do a rollback to an earlier stage and see if I still don't have any sound, since I wasn't quite sure when I lost the sound. Anyway, away I went and after 2 tries got it back on my third. So, making sure not to install any programs I returned to updating Windows, and lo and behold, suddenly my sound went again. Hmm a windows update did this? So, me thought do a rollback to before and it will be sorted, but ack.. when I click to open it no box opens for me to chose my restore point. Tried it again and was told it was already running, so me look, not seeing and though, ahh can't be bothered and instead I did a Factory Reset!

So, now knowing that it was a Windows Update that killed my sound, but not which one I thought I try and find out.. so started updating them one by one (Yes I know, quite tiresome but hey, I was curious and had the time to do it so..), anyway coming towards the end I was told I have the SP2 update, and still the sound was working so I thought, lets do it. But, after restart, lo and behold, no sound again! Aha, it was the SP2, so me thinking I am clever went in to do a pick a restore point before SP2.. just to find that I did not have any today, even if I had last time! So that went that clever idea!

Instead I thought, lets talk with HP support and off I went, had two chat with them. The first guy told me to download Microsoft FixIt (didn't work), Unistall and install the sound drivers (didn't work), do a BIOS update (didn't work), then back to talk with them again and the second guy suggested that I search for "Services" and then check "Windows Audio", which said it was started so back to start.. then he said to resolve this issue we have to perform a system recovery. Ohh great I thought, already done one of them! He did apologize for the inconvenience and said in this case they will pick up the laptop and get their service center to look at it. Great, here I had the laptop for three days and away it goes already. So he started to open a service order for me and then come back asking for some information about me, and saw it was still under warranty so wouldn't cost me anything, and then asked that if I was from the United Kingdom, I sort of. yeah duh, where else? not realizing I been talking with the HP center in the USA! *facepalm* :o

Anyway, he said I had to contact HP over here which I did, only to be told that since I was helped by a guy in the US (even if he worked for the same company) they have to go through the motions over here, then I just looked at my laptop and thought, yeah that will be easy considering I am already doing a System Restore! When I told that he was like uhmm ahhh ehhh well, we have to because we are under a different contract.. Me thinking BS.. I did tell him I had the chat logs from the two techs I spoke to and could email them, then we didn't have to waste mine and their times going through the same stuff, he was like, ehh well ok, but we still have to try it our way. So have emailed them to them but still thought I ask you guys if you could help out!

So, first sorry for the rant above but thought I tell you what been done and all, plus I am sure one or two will get a laugh out from it! Secondly, has anyone had similar problem?

The onboard sound is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and I couldn't find any more update driver then what is already on the lappy.

If you need more information about the lappy here is a link to the HP site in the US, which is the only place I could find the spec on, they don't have them on the UK site what I can see. Hope it is ok to link to the HP US site though! If not, feel free to remove!

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! That is if anyone can manage to plow through all that! :p:o

Sounds like a pain. If it was me, I would refuse to have it sent in for repair and demand a replacement. Only problem with that is if it's a Microsoft update, it may just be a compatibility thing. If you've only just had it, you could ask why didn't you get Windows 7 with it.

It is a pain to be honest.. I have now updated windows to the point that all I got to do is update it to SP2, just waiting to hear back from them about the email I sent to them.. Can't really ask for a replacement I think, since I did not buy it directly from them but hey, who knows!

ohh and I forgot to mention that the tech guy I spoke to over the phone here in the UK did say he never heard anyone have this problem, so I am guessing if it only happened with mine it can't really be a compatibility issue can it, since it have worked for others right?

When you did the SP update did you use the IT distribution pack single download (so can save it to a CD and run on multiple computers), or used Windows Update website?

If it's a new machine, why don't you order the upgrade disc from HP to Windows 7?

Hmm good idea, I will look into that.. you know if it will be all free though? But the sound should still be working on Vista SP2 anyway.. right?

I used the automatic update feature to get the SP update and the rest.. so I guess it's from the website kind of way?

These are the single file downloads. Saved mine to an external HDD, but you can also get ISO versions if search Technet

32-bit version, 5 language
64-bit version, 5 language
If you need additional languages there is a link at bottom of Overview section for each.

I originally used Windows Update site and it seemed to download a lot more than obtaining this single file. Also handy if you have to reinstall again so no need to re-download updates.

Thanks Bane, downloading it now as I type this! Even if i am already updated until the SP2 it will be good to have just incase the HP guys can't problem solve it over their support and I have to send it back for soemthing else or repair, and then I don't have to go through downloading everything until the SP2!

Thanks Fegruson, will be looking into this as well!
