A warship built with steel salvaged from the World Trade Center has been put into service in New York.

Hundreds of US Navy officers and sailors and also families of 9/11 victims attended the commissioning of the USS New York in Manhattan.

"No matter how many times you attack us, we always come back," US Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said.

The bow of amphibious assault ship has 7.5 tonnes of melted steel from the debris of the World Trade Center.

Cool in a way I suppose, but on the other hand, couldn't it be seen as bad luck to be sailing a ship made from steel of where people died on 9/11? I know steel is just steel, it depends if you are superstitious I guess.

I am sure a lot of that perfectly good steal is in use in many many places, not just that stupid boat, its paint job is horrid.

Good idea. It annoys me the ammount of increased security and rubbish brought about because of the 9/11 attacks, in some ways we lost, this is a nice symbol that shows you cannot defeat us and we will always come back stronger.

Pretty cool ship.

A symbol is clearly all it is, a ship tha size, 7.5 tonnes of metal in the bow? Bet the anchor weighs more.

I assume the 'amphibious' part of it name refers to vehicles it can launch rather than it sprouting legs darwinian stylee and marching onshore itself? Now that would be worth seeing.

Im willing to bet theirs a piece of Metal thats the size of a 20 pence piece in one of the stairs.
