Told to turn it down.

Good. The onus would be on you to move.

Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.

Not sure where you are, but here in the UK it doesn't matter what time it is. If you're causing a nuisance, you're causing a nuisance.

Not really, if they want peace and quiet, then they can move as its not reasonable to expect that in flats anyways.

Link to UK noise laws please as well I'm sure the noise needs to be outside normal hours to complain. Obviously running loud music all day everyday is ridiculous but imo the OP should be able to listen to loud music during the day should he please.

My sub basically turns the room directly below mine into a giant sub heh... doesn't sound _that_ loud upstairs but the room below gets full benefit...

When I was living in a flat I changed the LFE and crossover settings so that more of the bass was played into the (mid) woofer as this sounds louder but the sound is more contained and doesn't travel.

We play our music loud and we are on a ground floor flat. The guy living above us has been down and complained once and bangs on his floor sometimes. I dont know what he does but it sounds like he is dragging something heavy around, usually at around 3am when we are trying to sleep during the week. Also there is a horrible smell from the drains.

The police knocked on our door last week asking for him. He might complain at our loud music but we think he's dragging bodies around upstairs and melting them down in an acid bath that then goes past my bedroom into the drains!

Give and take i suppose!!

No, he shouldn't. Show a bit of consideration for those around you. When you live in a flat you need to make concessions about noise - just because your neighbours aren't sleeping at 2pm doesn't mean its fine to listen to "loud music". Your neighbours could (not unreasonably) expect that they won't have to sit in their lounge and listen to whatever music you are listening to.

Once you grow up and buy a proper detached house then you can decide to listen to "loud music".

I would squeal if it was at an unreasonable time but not during the day. Also if you wanted peace and quiet then its not reasonable to live in flats so yeah not the OPs faults.

Theres no need for a personal attacks either

So you'd be happy if I bought a PA system and started playing D&B through the walls all day would you? Because that's what you're saying

You'd just have to get used to it.

I thought nothing could be done legally unless its after 10pm?

Fair play if you get on with your neighbours but if you dont (like i have in the past) then go for it. We had student neighbours when we were students who were right nobs.

As vonhelmet said, that's the time you absolutely must keep it down, but if you are causing a substantive nuisance to others around you action could also be taken.

If you "absolutely need music in your life otherwise it's void of meaning" then get some headphones or turn the bass down - and get out a bit more.

tbh use a bit of common sense, sub woofers in apartments is not really going to work.

You are going to be ****ed off because you cannot use it as you would like and your neighbours are going to be pretty miserable.

That's actually what I would do if I had a neighbour like that. Blast some dubstep from 8am-11pm (especially on the weekends) each and everyday until they realise how nice it actually is when neighbours show some consideration.

Yep, the hours stated by the law are an absolute minimum. If you are creating enough noise it won't matter what time of the day you are playing it. My mum lived in a flat and she could hear the music coming from the top flat, 3 floors above her during the day.

The guy living directly below this idiot contacted his LA who sent noise pollution officers around to measure the extent of the noise. They then sent the guy a letter which I am assuming he ignored because about 3 months later, some guys came around and carted out all his hi-hi stuff.

My mum said he was shouting out the window at them when they left and he threw a lamp at the van, lol. :p

Gotta take all circumstances into consideration, You could have a neighbour who works night shift and is trying to sleep during the day, and a deep thumping bass can keep anyone awake.

Sure you dont have to be quiet as a mouse, but its fair to expect to need to make compremises if you live in flats, and subs are really bad as the deep bass travels, often getting louder as it induces sympathetic vibrations in floors and ceilings.

Thumbs up to the OP who is trying to make an effort to keep his neighbours happy. You can probably have a little more volume if you keep the sub at a minimum.

As for noise laws, they are mostly guidelines, and each local council can have their own interpretation of them. There can also be local bylaws which take precidence as well, so there is no fixed >10pm <8am "rule" that works everywhere. Furthermore, if the noise is genuinely annoying the noise pollution acts can be called into play regardless of the time. If your neighbour's complain and you simply get a louder system (or turn it up), you'll likely end up with the local council, or a police officer knocking on your door.

I consider myself lucky, I have 2 foot thick stone walls, and can turn my system up to 12o'clock which is damn loud, and still the neighbours dont complain :). Although they did mention they can hear my puppy barking in the night

Buy a better sub, it's an eltax which will sound like a boomy mess anyway.

Consider something decent from the likes of BK and be amazed how much less distortion and noise they produce.

Where did we give our consent to having someone enter the premises to fine or take away paid for goods? sounds like theft to me.

isnt that a little pot and kettle?

the "Noise Act 1996" isnt limited to nightime hours and can result in fines and confiscation of equipment so i think a little give and take is required..

Some are unreasonable: The woman in the flat below me has complained to me about:

1. Walking around my flat, because they can hear it downstairs. She asked if I could 'change the way I walk'.

2. Flushing the toilet.

3. Talking loudly.

4. Having a wooden floor in my sitting room. Despite the fact EVERY flat (130?), including the one downstairs, has one, as they were built that way.

The floors are solid concrete - the place was only built 8 years ago, so it's fairly soundproof. In contrast, I can hear absolutely nothing from any other flat around mine.

I seem to have got away with ignoring her, and she's stopped complaining. Not sure I've actually changed how I behave, though.

Does this mean you're going to cancel the nightly gymnastics club that you run? :(

I keep my music / film volume down after 9pm, it's not really that loud during the day anyway if it is on.

A happy neighbour is a helpful neighbour :)

id like to see you get a police escorted council member assested for theft tbh..

would hopefully be settled or if needs be go to court before it came to that, luckily the biggest organised crime syndicates usually send you letters before they take any hostile action to give you a little chance at least, even if you never knew you had offended anyone in the first place.

I think during the day, if your neighbour is in, do a compromise on noise levels, if she doesn't agree, that's her problem - you've tried.

In the evening, switch to some really decent headphones and have it as loud as you like - that's what I do.
