Blackberry Bold II

Thanks for the tip off Spawn, phoned Vodafone today and they're sending out a Bold 9700 for delivery tomorrow to replace the disaster that is the Storm 2.

No problem...i only found out last night that they came into stock:). Im having to wait till 23rd of Nov for my 9700 as im ordering it sim free for £380.

Im having to send my Storm2 back as theres a problem with the screen...sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesnt...saying that i still love it but ill be getting another tonight off my vodafone contact...so sending the one Voda sent to me on Fri and gonna keep the one i get tonight...plus i dont fancy paying £300 and extending my contract for another 6mths:p.

The Storm 2 seems to be as bad a flop as the original Storm judging by my experience, the dropping calls problem is infuriating and I'll be glad to be rid of it!

Its strange as i didnt suffer from that problem...perhaps being in London has something to do with it but tbh my voda contract only gives me 600mins so i dont spend a lot of time talking on it or will i be in the future...ill use my Bold with my tmobile contract for the talking lol.

Like i said im sending mine back to some screen clicking issues...just waiting on them to send me out the returns pack...ill be getting another Storm2 tonight which my voda contact is supplying me with an unlock code as well FOC.

I absolutely love the Storm2...its a much much better device than the original storm was.

Now just waiting patiently for the 9700 to be released sim free so i can retire my original Bold and use that instead.

It drops calls both connected to the Access Gateway in the office and connected to a normal 3G cell in Watford (with full signal).

Any user reviews yet? I am currently trying to decide between this and the HTC Hero....anyone offer some words of wisdom which I should choose?!

I've just swapped a Blackberry 8900 for a Hero. The 8900 was nice, you can't fault it for what it does and what it stands for, but to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed with it. Perhaps I should have gone into a store and played with both before getting the 8900 on contract and realising I'd made a big mistake.

The browser is awful, you can get 3rd party browsers like Opera mini and bolt but to be honest the web experience is still poor with those. It doesn't support flash too but I've heard RIM are working on this but when it gets released nobody knows. It won't be this year thats for sure.

I thought the keyboard on the 8900 was too small to use properly when typing emails and sms etc. I think the 9700 has similar buttons to the Bold and I've been told the Bold is a nicer keyboard to use.

The apps are ok on the 8900, quite a lot of good free ones. Battery life is ok 2 days+ with minimal use. Form factor the 8900 was a really nice size and I think the 9700 is a similar size.

I'm sure the 9700 will be a nice phone but you really need to get a Hero and a 9700 together and have a play about with them both before you pull the trigger, like I should have done.

Like I say I've got a Hero now. I've only had it a few days but I've been blown away by it already. I was initially put off by the battery problems some people have been having, but the battery seems to last just as long as the 8900, which is nice.

Like I said go into a store and play with them both. Thats the only way to make a proper decision.

hmmmm maybe I will go in and give it a go Warren...

I know you have 14days to return your handset with Orange but how much can you actually use it before this? I'm thinking I'll upgrade to it then mess about with it then decide whether to keep it or not, I will probably look to 3rd party Browsers too in all honesty as it does seem that the BB standard one is pretty sucky.

Yeah I had 14 days to try it out, but I couldn't make my mind up whether to keep it or send it back, I was umming and arhing over it, then my 14 days ticked over and I was like 'I want a Hero really badly'.

I havent seen any phone supporting full flash as of yet...its coming...a lot sooner than you think.

But yes the standard web browser isnt that great compared to the google and iphone web browsers but its getting better slowly...OS5 is pretty decent with a lot of potential to unlock in the future.

Saying that the Blackberry developers conference is going on now in San Fran and from what im reading over at crackberry...theres a lot of good stuff about to be released...a lot of API's are being made available to dev's whereas before RIM werent willing to but with the Storm 1 and 2...they have realised that they need to keep up with the others.

Personally i wont be moving from BB as nothing else out there has made me go wow...ive played with the Hero and to me it was a bit meh...ive got a ?Magic which is just sitting in its box gathering dust after getting bored of it within a month.

But really the best thing to do is to go and play with both handsets and see which one suits you.

Ive played with the 9700 a week ago before it was made available to the public and i have to say its a very nice device....keyboard is very bold like but its a smaller device than the Bold but i loved it and have placed my order for a sim free one...setting me back £380 so not too bad i suppose. At the moment i have a Storm2 that im quite addicted to but im sending it back as it has a few screen issues and i know a guy who works in Vodafone...hes got me one offline...the one i have now i have to pay £300 plus 6 mths extension on my contract...

Hey dave, I'm on simplicity at the moment with a blackberry costing me £20 a month for:

600 minutes
1200 texts
free o2 to o2
blackberry services

:)

I achieved this feat by being nice to them on the phone and asking for BBS trial run for a month as I hadn't used it before. They were happy to give it to me and I said I didn't want to pay £5 at the end of it for no upgrades in minutes etc... so they gave me them as well.

I will be ditching this during the month though as I'm grabbing the new 9700 on tmobile business unlimited. If you're waiting for it on o2 then it might be a while, afaik only tmobile & vodacrap are offering it at the moment.

I'm in similar situation as daveydave, but I'm being offered the O2 1200 for less money (30 pounds/month including BB internet instead of £45) plus the BB 8520 or 8900 for free.
I got an iPhone at the moment, and been disconnected from the "phones" world for a bit, as I didn't have to renew the contract.

Now, I don't know what to do, if get the 8900 with the contract or go for simplicity 20 pounds and use it with the iPhone.

Is there anything new coming out to replace the 8900 that I should be aware of?

Not yet...rumours of a 3G curve are running around but nothing set in stone...the only new BB thats out soon is the 9700 BOLD2 but that will cost you a pretty penny...bascially the 8900 is probably your best choice...the 8520 is good but is a basic entry level bb and is quite big and ugly....8900 is a slick, small device.
In fact one of the guys who works for me finally took my advice and got one..got a 8900 curve on Orange and its a really nice piece of kit...only thing lacking is the 3G which it doesnt have...if you want 3G then the 9000 Bold and 9700 Bold2 are your main options.

Well, that's the thing.
I mostly use the phone for internet (not browsing as much.. but emails.. twitter.. etc), so moving from the iphone 3g to a non 3g it's a bit....
But I guess O2 won't offer me the same contract and free phone if I go for the 9000 or 9700 (does anyone know when O2 will be getting the 9700?)

Vodafone called me today and offered me:

900 mins
Unlimited texts
Unlimited weekend landline calls
Unlimited internet
Free Blackberry internet service
And the phone in question for free..

All for £35....

Bye bye 02!

I took the deal and will be cancelling my contract with 02 on the 24th.

My phone is being delivered free by courier tomorrow to my office.

Can't believe O2 are so willing to lose a 10 year customer so easily.

I just had another quick call with O2 and they have no idea when they will be getting the 9700.... they claim that most people are moving to simplicity 20pounds until the January sales when there will be loads new phones coming out....

daveydave, which phone did you go for at the end with Voda?9700?

Careful. If you live around London vodaphone can be quite bad, even in central! Few of my colleagues have to go to windows to make calls in W1.

If you can get someone to put it under their business you can get Tmobile Unlimited minutes (Mobiles & Landlines), unlimited texts, unlimited internet, free 9700 and reduced international make/recieve rates for £35 (inc VAT).

Just a thought :)

That's just their ploy to get people to hang about. Which they are not.

I went for the 9700, as thats the phone I was waiting for. With 02 unable to give a straight answer to their customers, I decided enough was enough and I leave for a network that a communication strategy, a functioning 3g network and the correct attitude to retaining and capturing customers.

I'm in sunny surrey, i've spoken with mates on voda who have given me the green light signal/service wise

if you want to get the 8900 for browsing I would seriously look elsewhere.

Edit - sorry just re-read your message. 8900 is great for Twitter, Facebook and emails. Just browsing aint too hot.
