Trading in the S3... for a Passat??

did i mention the standard radio doesnt have RDS either

No RDS

in a car manufacturerd in 2009 !! outrageous. It is of course because its the unit the australians fit, but thats not much consolation when you've spent nearly 30k on one and have to buy a proper radio for one.

I bet the R36 will have DAB as standard too..

I don't think they have RDS in Australia, certainly none of the cars I had were fitted with RDS stereos. It was a bit backward really

what they dont tell you for example, is that the headunit is part of the dash and only tunes FM in 0.5 mhz increments. Want galaxy 105.1 ? nope you cant have it. 105.0 or 105.5 is all you can get :(

ROFL that is comical in this day and age, it doesnt surprise me with Vauxhall though. The VXR8 has a lovely engine but is not comparable to an R36. It is a brute but the interior is appaling and the indicators are on the wrong side!! :D

Seems a strange choice for you Dolph but if you're happy with the deal then thats what matters, 5 yr warranty sounds good if you're going to keep it for a long time!

Its compared with trying to listen to Talk Sport on medium wave

It disappears everytime you drive under a power line or into a tunnel !

I would say £21k for a VW passat is poor value, even though it's a year old and has a v6/DSG.

I would rather spend more/less get a car that's slightly faster/slower/thirstier and buy a car that offers better bang for buck.

Such as?

£21k for that car is not 'poor value'.

Agree with Jamoor, really poor car for the money. While i will obviously not argue the fact that its technically a good price for the package, at the end of the day its a fairly low end car in the scheme of things which represents awful value for me to me as a car enthusiast.

£21k buys a lot of high end metal. Out of warranty high end metal but to be honest if you have a £21k available for a car purchase then something as immaterial as a car's ongoing running costs should not be an issue. If they are then i would urge you to rethink your priorities as £21k is actually a useful amount of capital.

IIRC he traded a financed S3 so he didn't actually have £21k sitting around which he decided to blow on a Passat.

Shows how completely differently people think doesn't it :) Sounds like a complete nightmare to me, financed jumped up Passat, amazing.

the r36 isnt that bad, surely? it will depreciate like a stone, that would scare me the most, but if i wasnt footing the bill for the depreciation id rather that than something else common or garden

Dunno how quick it'll carry on depreciating, but it's lost 10k+ already!

Good job it isn't then... Fox conveniently forgot that the S3 was financed not because the cash wasn't there, but because I'd rather keep the cash available in case of emergency and pay the interest than work to regain it and risk something occurring without significant savings, because as we've discussed in the past, relying on being able to get a loan in an emergency is not a good idea because the nature of the emergency (for example, redundancy) could prevent that from happening.

With regards to running costs, the costs of most 'high end' metal out of it's warranty can be crippling, an E60 M5 or an AMG merc, for example, can remove cash from your wallet at a frankly astonishing rate that makes the purchase price look like the least of your problems if you have bad luck with one, and that is without getting into real exotica. I'm comfortable with the compromise made between the variables (type of car, risks of ownership and cost) that has resulted in this choice, irrespective of whether others would have done differently.

Just got back (after a detour for food etc), Still very happy with the decision, got good (relatively) fuel economy on the way back from Bristol (surprisingly better than the S3 on the same journey last week). Pics will hopefully come tomorrow if the weather is reasonable.

Lots of buttons and controls to find out what they do now...
