Was just thinking, lets see how many people here are on register.

I've carried a donor card since I was 16 (now 38), my mother was taken into hospital and is very sick at the moment and that got me thinking, if she needed anything like a kidney then I would be there right away, so I rang up the donor register and made sure my name was on the list.

So come on people a simple 5 minute phone call could make all the difference, don't just think about it and put it off for another time, do it now!

Call 0300 123 23 23 now, open 24/7.

SJ.

I did it when I got my provisional licence at 17.

The true test is to give organs when you're still alive to people you don't know.

Unless it was family or a very close friend I just wouldn't do it while I was still alive. Whatever peoples opinion on that is is irrelevant to me as that's my choice. I Am registered to donate after death however.

If you're happy to give your organs to someone who quite possibly doesn't deserve it, then good on you.

As for me, for now, I'll choose to keep them.

I just registered online. Thanks for the proverbial kick up the backside OP. My belief is if my life can improve the quality of someone elses, as the rest of my body becomes worm food, then why not.

Thanks.

I'm conflicted about organ donation. IF a family member was ill then I'd do it in a heartbeat (probably - it's still a major thing to do... and maybe I'm a little selfish, but I don't know, and hope never to be in that situation). However being butchered after dying seems a little odd and gives me the heebie jeebies. It's completely irrational, I know this... but nonetheless on my mind.

It is a very very worthy thing to do though and am impressed that so many people do. The best thing I've ever done is given blood on a few occaisons.

It's a complete irrelevance once you die, the hardest thing would be donate while you're alive, such as bone marrow, kidneys or a cut of your liver. That is the stuff I keep for family and close friends.

A post mortem is quite... violent. So butchery doesn't really seem like a good reason. But I do understand - it REALLY gives me the jeebies.

What differentiates the line between deserves and does not deserve? Even if we assume that the life the person has lived up to now suggests them as a less than upstanding member of the human race then how could I know what they will do in the future with any certainty?

Even if I could this isn't an attempt to make you change your mind, I'm just curious about the idea of some being worthy and others not.

I wonder how long organs can "live" for. Say it outlives the receiver, still good to go or wear and tear means it's not acceptable?

You mean if the recipient also dies (relatively young) but the organ is ok then can it be transplanted again? Not entirely sure, I can't imagine the situation comes up all that often but I suppose in theory if the organ is still healthy then it should be acceptable for another transplant - unless of course there are rules about it in the same way that people who have received a blood transfusion cannot give blood.

I'm on the register, if someone else can get use out of my body after I'm dead then good luck to them, I'm certainly not needing it at that point.

Yep been on the register for god knows how long now.
Don't see why you wouldn't be, you're dead, why not when you're dead go on to do some more good in the world?

Donate blood, donate organs, save lives.
