Hi all,

Just a question for 60gb PS3 owners- just a quickie regarding the quality of PS2 games running on the PS3? Im looking at getting a 60gb PS3 with the intention of hooking it up to my Samsung 24" via HDMI and was wondering if someone could comment on how they look; I've heard mixed reviews. In particular, I'm looking at using Final Fantasy X, X-2 or XII as a reference.

Any input?

They look like PS2 games! I played Gran Turismo 4 quite a bit on my 60GB when I first had it as there were not many other games to play. There are options to sharpen them I think but I could not really tell the difference.

It was nice playing it with wireless pads though!

If the console is more than £300 2nd hand heck even £250 then I would rather get a ps3 slim and ps2 slim, ps2 should only be £30 if you look around.
Why get a ps3 to play ps2 games anyways.

It tends to vary game to game but of the games I've played they've all looked noticeably better. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular looks great when upscaled.

I've not tried any of the Final Fantasy's but I understand FFXII is mean't to upscale pretty well.

I can get a preowned 60gb model for £130 with my staff discount...that's why.

Sorry to hijack the thread but don't want to make a new topic.

My PS3 can play PS1 games so was wondering if it would play PS2 ones aswell? I have no PS2 games around to try it.

As I understand it (though don't quote me on this) all PS3s can play PS1 games becuse they don't need the same sort of emulation which many PS2 games require.

As far as I know, the only PAL PS3s which can play PS2 games are 60gb ones, all others have omitted the circuitry and/or emulation software needed to run PS2 games.

Ok thanks mate, i have the 80gb version so when i put in a PS1 game i was a bit confused, i heard that a certain model number can only run PS2 games in the 80gb version but weather its true or not

Well, my friend has an 80gb and it plays PS2 games, so maybe a limited run of these do it too...but as a rule, I think the only ones we can be relatively sure of are the 60gb.

The only PAL version that has PS2 BC is the 60gb.

There was an 80gb NTSC version with it but it was a limited edition (MGS4 bundle I think in the US).

It will be American - there was no PAL SKU that supported PS2 other than the 60Gb. Perhaps he replaced the HD with an 80Gb?

ps3ud0

i ran GT4 on my 40" LCD and was very disappointed.

No detriment to the PS3 i think, it just pales into insignificance when compared with GT5 in glorious 1080p, so much so you forgot what the PS2 really looked like back in the day.

as stated they look like ps2 games in all their sd glory, when i played mgs2 and 3 i played them at their native res cropped on my monitor and they looked fine, no worse or better than when i played them on a ps2

I didnt play that many PS2 games but did enjoy a bit of F355
"Oh the memories"

Upscaling is a bit mmm meh ahhh geees.
Depends on the games, really if you want to enjoy and get into PS2 games then use a PS2 for full proper playback and no issues.

No, I've seen the console and the box as well as a PS2 game running on it. Wondering if maybe Sony were cutting corners in the early days by throwing 80gig HDs into the consoles which originally had 60 in them, just to balance out the stock.

Either way, somewhere along the line there has been an 80gig with PS2 capability, if only because I've seen it with my own eyes!
