......ok.
When i got this heap of junk on release day back in July 2008, it went back 2 days later for replacement (great sign ).
The 2nd one worked much better but after a few months it got very sluggish. I've only ever installed 2 apps, vodafone sat nav and some other thing that NEVER worked.
So i wiped it last year some time and put on rom version 1.93.161.2 WWE.
I don't use my sat nav too often but its not worked since june time. It just never picks up any satellites and thus cannot be used. It worked fine for about 6 months i guess.
Its also really sluggish again, eg, if i unlock the phone to reply to a sms i've just received, it would literally take over 1min for the 'reply' menu to show. Or if i want to make a call, i use the touchflow to get to 'people' but again it takes over 1 min before it will allow me to scroll through my 10 faves that are in there. (hardly a huge list).
So, having spoken to vodafone....i'm ready to update to rom 1.97.xxx.x (whatever).

Now, i have my exchange mail synching with the TD and want to copy my contacts off before wiping the device as they have some contacts in from previous that aren't in my exchange contact list.
Currently my contacts are in the phone and not the sim. If i copy them to the sim they will be edited down to shorted file names etc.

When attaching the phone to the pc and using the 'disk drive' mode, i was hoping to find somewhere that holds the contacts so i can offload them to the pc, but nope!

Can anyone help with this please? It's really just my contacts i want to save. My exchange is work email. I never connect the phone to the pc for any activesync purposes, purely for disk drive mode and copying files off/on device.
And any advice on why its so damned slow would be nice

Any help much appreciated, thanks. :)

Thanks Tim, i already have activesync installed but it only seems to sync one way, ie. pc > device (i think anyway).

Regarding the rom, i tried the HTC one before but it wouldn't allow me to use it with my vodafone branded device.

You can change the activesync settings so it does device > PC if that helps.

Wander across to the XDA forums & get some decent software for the phone, I got my TD2 from T-mobile & it's much nicer now with 'optimised' phone software :)

thanks mrgrubby, will check that out.
However if i use alternative software to vofadone am i likely to bork up my vodafone sat nav re-install?

Sorry, haven't got a clue, but I'm certain somebody on those forums would be able to answer the question :)

When trying to flash the HTC rom you will indeed get an error, device mis-match or something. You need to first flash HardSPL 1.93 from xda forums then you'll be able to flash any non-vodafone rom.

Once the HTC rom is on you'd not have the vodafone sat nav, but igo8 and TomTom are both better anyway.

I have this phone and simply would not be able to use it without using custom ROMs.

Which one do you use? I've tried probably 20-30 custom rom's, win6.1 and 6.5 and have always gone back to 2.03 HTC. They all just seem sluggish.

Depends what interface you like and what features you need really.

For Manilla UI I found the best one to be

Or I'm currently using this with the standard 6.5.1 Titanium UI

Also, use MTTY before flashing and hard reset after flashing as I found it makes a big difference to the performance!

For the contact issue forget about active sync and just use this software instead http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1806 (although there may very well be a newer version as this was the first link on google). It copies your contacts, texts etc to a seperate file you save on to your memory card, then just use the program in reverse to stick all the information back after you have flashed it. :)

Brilliant posts guys thanks for all the input.

But are these free.

I've registered with xda forums and popped into the Touch Diamond thread. Will start a new one asking for 'total noobish' help, see what happens :)

But any more advice here is more than welcome.

Are those of you that use 2.03 HTC, is that instead of windows mobile os?
I basically have my exchange mail pushed to my TD and also one pop3 account setup. Other than that, i'd want my satnav, google maps and notes are pretty usefeul to me.......oh and the ability to have each key press respond to me within say oooh i dunno 2 secs?

HTC 2.03 is still built on win 6.1, but with its own TF3D/theme.

TomTom is free on Orange's latest rom I believe, but I think you have to download a map for it.
