Want: Cheapish "Touch" phone

OK - this is all the wife's fault :)

She has a contract with O2.
She pays very little a month - because she doesn't need loads of minutes/texts.
She isn't due a handset upgrade for a while.
She has decided that she wants a "touch" phone - I expect more for the novalty than anything else.

So with Christmas coming I thought I'd see what I could get her.
What "touch" phones are out there which I could buy contract free (maybe somebody selling an upgrade on EBay kind of thing)?
I really don't know what is out there - so what good "touch" phones are out there right now (including old models)?
What should be avoided at all costs?
 
If she wants a novelty toy, Iphone, not cheap though. If she wants a proper phone, have a look here. Some of them got to fit the requirements.

Reportily iphone has worse phone call quality compared to other handsets (admitedly I never tested that), platform itself is closed, without modifying software illegally, OS is gimped in terms of multi-tasking.

Not to mention the main reason, since when do you need a £400-£500 phone to make calls? Do you seriously want to me to believe that people buy iphone for its amazing phone call features? Don't be silly.
 
5800 about right, install Google Maps and SMS Preview from the store and you're good to go :)

ok.. :/ call quality is fine. Its a phone, its not going to be anything "amazing" /computer voip quality etc. (then again imo its better than my omnia.) Texting imo is a step ahead of winmo, it just looks and performs better.

also, with every phone os (windows android) they get "hacked open" to allow the user to do more, (from experience..) so saying that the platform is closed etc is bull. No smart phone/touchscreen will be purchased purely on its phone features alone, why bother with anything more than a 3310?

The sheer amount of dev for the iphone carries it yes, but to allow that to happen it has a pretty good base to work on.

I didn't buy one as a toy in anyway shape or form.

Anyway, iphone is too expensive to be considered here? unless the op wants to splash out! (330 for a 3g though? saves a hundred for the small extras of a 3gs..)

one to avoid; the lg cookie. They are a bit pants.
 
for a cheap touch phone id recommend the Samsung Genio

Been using it now for a couple of weeks and haven’t found a fault with it yet. good size and grip, has decent call quality, touch screen is responsive, works well with Google maps Facebook ect and has a lot of useful apps out of the box. the only downside I have found so far is the limited apps currently available for it but for the price you can’t complain.

I would recommend the LG GD510 "Pop".
Great phone, altho only 2G and a resistive touch screen (however a very good one - no stylus). It does pretty much everything you would need and looks good, is easy to use and rather cheap :)

And I tend to agree with rsatd, the iPhone is pretty much a toy/novelty item, sorry:p

I'd second that. A friends daughter has one and loves it.
