Im going to be upgrading my 2yr old 3870 early next year, and was just wondering what 1 I should go for. Ppl say that the 4890s are faster but the 5770s use dx11.

So do I go for the faster 4890 and dx10 or the slower 5770 but have dx11??

As you aren't going to make the purchase until january wait until then to make up your mind. The 5770 is basically an 4890 with Dx11 on 40nm but it's bottlenecked somewhere- most likely bandwidth. There is a rumour that the 9.12 drivers will be a nice jump, maybe due to improvements to the memory controller code for the 5000 series. We will see the 9.12 beta drivers in the next 10 days so you will get a more informed answer then. If ATi can close the gap on the 4890 then it's a very easy choice.

Thanks a lot for that info, but isnt the price a indication that the 4890s are the faster card??

The 4890 is faster, ~15%, I never said otherwise. With new drivers it is possible that this gap can be reduce but that isn't a certainty.
Also, how long do you plan to keep the card? If it's for more than a year then you should consider that you will be playing more and more Dx11 enabled games which will make the 5770 the faster card.

For all out performance stick with the 4890 but for power consumption and noise considerations the 5770's are top cards.....and if you care about DX11 which sounds like you will.

Then there is the drivers, i'd bet there is more to come from the 5770.

Crossfired 5770 is very enticing too, thinking hard about it myself.

I will prob keep the card until games start chugging, like Ive done with my 3870. So a good few yrs.

I would be inclined to go with the 5770. It should also offer a much quieter gaming experience- if noise is a factor for you!

inverseSquare: That's usually how it works. Sapphire are on offer this week ;)

5770's 4870 performance, so slightly slower than the 4890, but they've got no drivers yet, so will get better once they get some, and rumours are the 9.12's are going to have big performance increases for the 5 series, so id get one of those if i was buying now, plus the fact they are cheaper than the 4890's, and are not old tech swings it as well. :)

Thanks guys,, looks like its the 5770 then, cos I dont like a noisy pc and using less power is always a good thing. Im not sure about using dx11, cos Ive always disabled dx10 in games if possible on my 3870, cos of the speed diff between dx9 and dx10. But with the new card, I will always use dx10, cos the card will handle it easy, but not sure about using dx11 cos of the impacted loss on peformance??

Im going to be upgrading my 2yr old 3870 early next year,

to be honest if your gonna upgrade it early next year then this thread is useless. ask this question again 1 day before your making your purchase since prices would have changed and maybe new competition would have been out at around that time to alter your purchasing decision.

Will my cpu be bottlenecking when I upgrade?

cos atm my cpu is having a easy life with games set at med to high detail on 1280x1024. Like crysis uses 60-70% of cpu usage, but ppl say when crysis is maxed out, the cpu takes abit of a thrashing?

Also hopefully late next yr Im getting a 27" screen so I'll be gaming in 1920x1200 from then.

4890 is considerably faster than a 5770 especially at that res you intend to use., and from what preliminary benches show the 5770 just wont be able to cut in in dx11 games. you cpu shoudl be fine for most games, but as you shoudl be aware now a lot of quad core optimised games are out now and more will be following.
