Hey all

I had a call and it was one of those recorded messages. I was about to hang up and it said it was Barclays fraud prevention. It then asked me to ring back on another number which then told me that there were some potentially dodgy purchases and could I confirm them.

It said it would not ask for any account details etc, except it did ask for my DOB in a multiple choice question. Then it proceeded to tell me my 5 most recent transactions (some of which were only made last night), who they were too, when, and how much etc.

I carried on with it as I didnt actually give any info except for my DOB and the fact that I did infact make these purchases. But then one of my colleagues said anytime she has to deal with Barclays fraud its always a human and never one of these recorded messages that reads your name out to you in ventrilo style robotic TTS.

So reckon its ok, or I should ring barclays and see whats going on?

Cheers

If in doubt, always ring them to check.

Do this it will put your mind at rest.

Barclays have got all sorts of automated systems in place these days but I have always spoken to the fraud people but in this case I would still check.

I've had this myself before. But they (automated machine) rang me and didn't ask to be called back, as you were.
It was perfectly fine as I didn't disclose any details other than DOB from the multiple choice questions.

I have had two calls from Lloyds like that.

Both times however were after I had spoken to a person in the Fraud Prevention department.

I call legit.

I had this a couple of weeks ago.

Being totally sceptical about such automated calls, I ignored it each time it called. Then, that evening, tried to make an online purchase and they had suspended my card.

Ended up calling them directly and confirming the purchases were mine - this is the second time they've canned my card for suspicious purchases (for suspicious, read "more than one purchase from the same vendor for the same amount on the same day").

If you're ever unsure about something like this, call a number you can verify with a chequebook, statement or their website.

EDIT: I wouldn't trust the word of one individual who doesn't work for the specific department you believe is contacting you. Even people who have had fraud on their account have very little contact with the fraud department and different areas can do things differently (credit card vs debit card for example).

So far as I've heard these are dodgy calls from people who already have the majority of your details but only need the odd bit of information like your D.O.B I always ignore these calls and phone my bank afterward. So If in doubt call the bank

Its legit, they don't ask you anything they don't already know, obviously, sending out fake messages with every birthdate known to man on the offchance they get someone to confirm the right one is a billion to one chance so would be rather useless.

THe only stupid thing about it is this, Barclays should have MASSIVELY advertised the service as I hung up and checked out if it was legit online, wasting my time. They also spend AGES twittering on before you get to confirm purchases as legit or not. If I knew who it was I could put the number in my phone as Barclays, so when I get the call I would know its them, they can skip all the extra crap, do the DOB, the purchases and done, a 20 second call instead of a 5 minute one.

As said, you can choose to not do it through that call and go phone the proper Barclays number yourself if you want to be ultra careful/paranoid.

They are legit, I've had two from Barclaycard and one from Natwest in the past two months. The most recent Barclaycard one was actual fraudulent transactions too, so the system does work.

i keep getting this and they keep blocking my card and its saying irregular purchases, Thing thats ****ing me off is that its always because im buying from steam. If i keep doing it and confirm its me should it say "hold on that isnt irregular!".

I get really pee'd off with fraud prevention blocking my card at HSBC. Since they have become liable they have suspended my card on average 3 times a year

Had this last week. It's legit. Asked me to confirm DOB and then read transactions at me. Card was blocked, then after the call I could use it again.

As said though, if it had asked for Sort Code/Account i'd have put the phone down. Then again, I also googled the number beforehand to see who it was.
