MKV streaming to PS3 & 360

So let me get this straight (as i shunned MC on my 360 for tversity's simplicity) if i now go back to MC +360 MCE +win7 i can play mkv's NATIVLEY? What about xvid/divx ? Cheers

The 360 plays almost all current DivX and Xvid natively, and with divx7 installed on the media serving Windows 7 PC you can now transcode some MKV fils to the 360. It's not yet perfect and is still in development but it's pretty good imo.

blimey, things have moved on since i last checked thats awesome time for some media center fun then! Thanks!

this is AWESOME on 360!!! In tversity MKV transcoding either didnt work or maxed out my 3ghz quad to the point of PC crashing. Just ran an MKV in MCE w/divx7 and my cpu never went above 10% load!! Loving this!

Indeed, we have two 360s and a PS3 in the house if different rooms so transcoding not only defeats the point of HD content but would also quality drops even further when 2/3 people start transcoding.

I'd buy a Windows 7 Licence just for streaming! On RC7232 till June 1st though :D

i've found the ps3 media server software to be brilliant for this. don't have a 360 so can't comment on what to use for that

PS3 Media Server is a brilliantly simple program. A lot smaller and easier to use than TVersity. However, when I tried to watch an mkv file, it was stuttering :(

The file plays fine on the PC. I guess it's just the size of the file. (6-7gig)

Need a faster router :p

+1

TVersity sucks now!

Agreed. It worked fine at one point and then they updated their software and it never worked again.

I thought that too, but I have one .mkv file at over 8gb and the the 4.5Gb one stutters. Make no sense, plays fine on the PC but not over the PS3. :/

OK downloaded PS3 Media Server and WOW ! Runs like a dream. Actually I really put it to the test. I had TWO PS3's both streaming 1080P MKV's from my one single Win7 64bit PC, and both streamed absolutely fine.. Then on top of this, i sent the PC off on a huge download, and still the streams worked fine.. Except for maybe a short bit of stuttering.. But hey it sure was under load..

Only about 30% of my MKV's were working on my 360, plus with the fan noise, i don't think i'll bother trying that again.. But with the PS3 Media Server running a treat.. who'd want to bother anyway.

Very happy overall.. very very happy.

One slight nagging problem... How do i turn off the subtitles? I think I've switched them off in every concievable option within the application.. but low and behold, they are still there in some movies..

Any idea's (PS3 & media center)
