Also, gotta love how he reckons most Xbox games are £50. I can't believe that there are people that don't shop around for better prices on games. I have never paid more than £40 for any standard edition Xbox game, and most of the time it is nearer the £30 mark anyway.

I guess Microsoft are not going into details about the bans as it could give away how they're detecting "modifed" consoles.

MS: If that was the case why is your console's BIOS checksum/flash version/hardware register set as XXXX.
Customer: Oh wait, there was the time... But I didn't think that would count
To competely ban the consoles seems a little draconian. A warning to desist and time to respond (for those unfairly affected) would have been a far better approach IMO.
Good luck getting unbanned.

Bang on. I figure that because it's "newsbeat" its aiming at teenagers and young adult who do the same and will now think twice.
If this fella is working full time then he should be able to pay for games. I work full time and manage ok so wy can't he?

Im still alive. No Microsoft heavies yet lol. Had a good conversation with a member of Microsofts on line security today, who has assured me my console is either modified in some way ( what a joke ) or ive been playing games before there release, hmm I dont think so!! Ive finally managed to get them to accept my console in my opinion is not "flashed" and they have actually sent me a UPS label to send it to Germany for investigation. They say it will be away for 2 weeks, they are so going to have to eat humble pie!!! Im so gonna push for a good few years of free live membership after this. Hang for the outcome, but this is gonna be so poitive. My only concern is that they say that one the console is banned they cant unlock it so here comes a new "Elite"

Not sure if you have previously mentioned this, but did you buy the console second hand?
It's not uncommon for places like Argos etc to repackage systems that have been returned. Maybe someone flashed the drive and returned it or a refurbished drive was used.
I would try sticking a backup in there just to make sure hehe.

The only thing I don't like about this is... IF they have stuffed up, we're never going to know how.
Playing armchair lawyer and part-time pedant here but copyright infringement only becomes a criminal act if the perpetrator is doing so for a gain, as part of a business or to distribute copies does it not? 'Personal' piracy such as this is a civil matter, no?
This is a very interesting thread. To the OP, I completely feel for you and the whole situation. However, does it not strike you as "losing control" in the battle as soon as you ship it to them? You will not have it in your possession for the first time and it will be out of your control. Could Microsoft stoop to such lows and illegal measures to protect themselves by "planting" said chip/illegal firmware on the XBOX? What evidence would the OP have that he did not do it at that point? His individual word against Microsoft, where Microsoft have to deal with thousands of pirates all of the time.
I don't like it. I would be inclined to hang on to the console and contact watchdog/trading standards/retailer you bought it from first. This is potentially a big story here.
I would very carefully backtrack and list everything you have ever bought for your console/games etc and can you provide details of the place you bought it from? Given that it is 2 years old you said and out of warranty, surely it would not be illegal for you to open it up and check if it has ever been opened before? You could take some of the offers up here as well to check if your console has been modded?
Finally can someone explain to me why the PS3 has not been hacked yet? I know very little about XBOX and have only ever played one a couple of times. PS3 however I own one and love it. I don't want anything like this to happen in the future with PS3. Why did XBOX get hacked and PS3 not? Apologies for my lack of knowledge on this but I just don't get why the PS3 has survived? Is it lack of anyone wanting to hack it based on the cost of BluRay digital media?

Maybe your console ID was cloned, i know some people managed to unban themselves via some very complicated methods involving pinching someones console ID (the thing that is banned) and essentially flashing it to their own console.
