£30 a day for thailand?

As others have mentioned, depends on where you are staying and what you intend to do.

To live the life of a beach bum in a sea front villa with some drinking and eating in 'local' type food places then you should be fine and have spare for trips etc. Backpackers holiday sort of thing.

If you are wanting something a bit more luxurious, visits to teh gogo bars and fall for the extremely pretty master men manipultors that are bar girls then your money will soon vanish but if played right you will have one very memorable time. Just be safe and take the required items with you as the local sizes can be a bit small.

I have been there around 5 times now and have moved to Singapore so am only 2.5 hours flight from Bangkok. I will be going to Phuket in December for a long wekend with my wife and kids (Their Singaporean not Thai :p). Looking forward to the golden beaches, warm water and my wife is looking forward to the cheap day long shopping.......

What were your plans ?, Were are you looking to go ?

Cheers

As an aside, how are you finding living in Singapore? Are you rich enough to shop at the ION?

Haha,

Been here 3 years now having moved from London.

Local wages so not quite enough to be going down to Orchard shopping.

Working for an international company so still get decent wages by local standards and european leave (locals only get around 10 days per year).

Haven't been to Ion yet although passed through it a number of times as it was being built.

I now own an apartment here (not a condo unfortunately) and in the last 2 years the value has gone up from 240k to 300k. Property prices here are really getting crazy. S$750k is minimum for a condo. Locals would usually earn around 2-3K / month if they are not high up in a company.

I agree with you from your blog about not getting smiles on the streets and the like but this I believe stems more from Chinese culture (around 80% of Singapores population is chinese) and being considered as 'decent'. It took a year fro a friend of my wife to feel comfortable to enter our house if my wife was not home.

Westerners are generally respected here as long as they mind their manners and are aware of the culture but Indians / Malays / Thais etc are generally looked down upon if not openly then in private as they usually forefill the building work.

Singapore is a country in a constant state of flux. Building is going on everywhere with constant improvements. This is great for modernisation but means a lot of the old history is lost. It also means that you can drive for 15 minutes and you are likely to come across a building site which spoils the photos a bit :D. The casino and hotel complex will be finished in Marina bay this year, the new central line MRT (mass rapid transport) will also start opening to a greater extent. The cable cars to Sentosa are being refitted and the holiday park there will also be opening soon.

You are right that Thailand is much cheaper. Singapore is a shopping city with the malls open usually until 9 or 10pm most days including Sunday. Whilst not as cheap as Thailand, the quality is usually very good. Singapore is a service country as most singaporeans demand good service and will complain.

A week or two for visit is by far enough for Singapore IMO as it is around the size of London in total. It is a great place to start to get used to Asia though before moving on elsewhere.

I'm going to be spending just over a month in Thailand/Singapore. Probably split it just over 3 weeks in Thailand and the rest making my way down and through Singapore :)

Its good to know that less than £20 a day can easily see you through Thailand. I'll be doing the bum life backpackery thing, not eating a great deal, walking about a lot, drinking a helluva lot and doing some excursions etc!!!

Can't wait actually!!!!!!

I was budgeting around £700-£1000 per month im away so this is good news!

Eating isn't expensive. You can get perfectly good meals from street vendors from around 50p.

Drinking is what will screw your budget. Beer was on average around £1.80 per bottle (not that much different from the UK really).

Edit: And this is just in bars. If you're planning to play the gogo/club scene then expect to pay at least twice that much. :p

My thoughts exactly. I lived in Singapore for four months and it was a good way to get used to the cultural differences you find in Asia but still with the comforts of the west.

It was nice to see how things had progressed since my last visit, with the casino having grown a little, but the MRT hasn't really progressed in the last year and a half as I'd have liked, at least in the areas I frequented.

The MRT has been in progress for at least th last 6 years I have been visiting or living in Singapore. It iwll be nice when done as as there is a new station right by my offices.

The casino has to open next year by contract I believe. 50% open is the agreement.

Interesting that gambling is a big thing in Chinese culture and can be a big problem. Local Singaporeans need to pay to enter the casino and families can get family members blacklisted :D

A bottle of beer is about 50-100 (£1-2) baht depending on where you buy it from, and semi decent accommodation is 300 (£6) a night baht on the islands. I'd say you need more than £30 a day inc accommodation, food, entertainment, booze etc. It's not as cheap as it used to be.

2500/ 5 dorra

500! Man, must've been a good 4 weeks. :D

thats what i spent last xmas for a month there

including flights

great great time :)
Yep, that included £600 on flights (I booked late) but I did get a free upgrade between Dubai and Bangkok :D

It was a hell of a holiday - the vast majority of which went on trips, travelling and, I'll be honest, booze. I spent a fortune on booze. I easily spent ten times on booze what I did on massages (as I wasn't a sex tourist - believe it or not!).

Phi Phi is dear, Koh Samet island is much cheaper, infact all of the east coast is cheaper and the people are a lot nicer, not as many tourists (UK).
You still must go to Phi Phi though just to see it, heard ghosts last time I was there, baby crying and people laughing but no-one there this was 2am right at the end of the island no-one about.
Lovely place though. if you need any help let me know, my wife is thai and I have been there a few times so sure we can help you

Anyone also been to vietnam? i am thinking either thailand or vietnam before i head home from oz, i doubt i will be loaded so cheaper the better! i will probably have around 2k and want to spend a month or so travelling about.

which country is cheaper? also i am lookin for a more authentic experience than seeing a bunch of largered up aussies and poms!

Dude

£20 will be fine for Thailand as long as you budget properly.
If "entertainment" means you will be nailing local girls then it will cost you more than £20!

I don't think you can really say Thailand or Vietnam provide a more authentic experience. If you hang out in the tourist areas of Thailand that's probably not going to provide the authenticity you want, and the same if you visit those sort of areas in Vietnam. I suppose if you are fairly indifferent about going to Thailand or Vietnam and just want to see some of what you would call 'real' country I guess I would suggest Vietnam, because tourism is much less developed there and in my experience it's much easier to get away from lagered up aussies and poms than in Thailand, for a first time visitor.

Vietnam also has awesome food.

Yeah stay of the beaten track, last we hired a 4x4 and drove from bangkok down to krabi to get ferry to Phi Phi Island was a 12hr drive, but we did see a lot normal travellers would miss.

I was on £10 a day but then i got in a Thai boxing ring and bet all my money on beating the next 5 thai fighters.

They think there really cocky, but if you just look at them there reallly skinny, so just give them a few hard punches and they go down really quick.

I won them all and from then on i could have been on £50 a day easy.
